Girl, Arise!: A Catholic Feminist's Invitation to Live Boldly, Love Your Faith, and Change the World by Claire Swinarski

Read Online and Download Girl, Arise!: A Catholic Feminist's Invitation to Live Boldly, Love Your Faith, and Change the World by Claire Swinarski. Winner of a 2020 Catholic Press Association book award (second place, gender issues-inclusion in the Church). Is it possible to be both a Catholic and a feminist? Claire Swinarski, writer and creator of The Catholic Feminist podcast, believes it is: “I’m a feminist for the same reason I’m bold and honest and sometimes ragey: because Jesus was all of those things.”In Girl, Arise!, Swinarski reconciles the two identities by demonstrating the strength and abilities women have to share with the Body of Christ, the importance of women throughout the history of the faith, and how the love you experience through Christ and the Church can change you and the world around you.In Girl, Arise!:A Catholic Feminist’s Invitation to Live Boldly, Love Your Faith, and Change the World Swinarski points out that while both “feminism” and “Catholicism” can mean different things to different people, both feminists and Catholics desire to make the world a better, fairer place. And she shows that by treating women with dignity equal to that of men—by calling them his friends and teaching them—Jesus acted as a feminist as well. With humor and sass, Swinarski addresses her frustration with the traditional concerns churches ascribe to women, as shown by the many talks directed at women focused on marriage and modesty rather than social justice. But she pinpoints the areas where modern feminism goes too far, arguing against abortion and exploring what it means to serve others rather than focus on our own needs first.Swinarski also tells the stories of holy women—including Vashti in the book of Esther, Sts. Thérèse of Lisieux and Joan of Arc, Mary Magdalene, and the Blessed Virgin Mary—to show how their faith influenced their actions, even when those actions went against traditional norms and roles of women. You will be empowered to embrace your God-given abilities as you follow the women who have gone before you in faith who—by announcing Christ to his disciples, believing in God’s promises, and being faithful in hardship—changed the world.

Girl, Arise!: A Catholic Feminist's Invitation to Live Boldly, Love Your Faith, and Change the World by Claire Swinarski Review

I will start by saying TCF is one of my very favorite podcasts and I got this book to support the author because she puts out great work. My first impression... the book was so small. I buy a lot of books, a lot of Catholic books too, and I was expecting a better value for the price. The content reads like a blog. It’s written very casually... a lot of emphasis on humor but comes across snarky. I like Claire’s message and I love the phrase “catholic feminist.” IMO this book reads for millenials or maybe even tries to hard to appeal to millenials. I have found her podcast presence to be more my fit than the book. I’m just surprised it reads more like a self published e book. At this point, I’m struggling through a book I was very excited to receive. However, I will update my review once I finish it if I change my opinion. I can get behind the message -minus the snark- this one is just not what I expected.

The conversational style and length of this book make it PERFECT to share. I mean, really, I'm a slow reader and read it in a few hours. Mostly because I was devouring it! It elevated my spirit to this place where fires are burning and tears are flowing. In simple language, it cuts to the heart of who Christians are called to be in this day, regardless of denomination, political/social views, or anything else that seems to separate. I could not be more grateful to Claire Swinarski for putting a voice to something many of us feel. I finally feel like I could go to a Women's March one day, and a Pro-Life one the next. I've already bought four copies!

This book has a good message. However, I think a woman can be bold without being profane. Claire's use of offensive language takes away from her message. I will not share this book with anyone.

Claire’s definition of feminism is believing that women are endowed with equal dignity as men. While many Catholics scoff at feminism as “man-hating, bra-burning” rebellion, and secular feminists exclude pro-life Catholics from their ranks, Claire declares there’s room at the table for all sorts and that people can’t be boxed up. She shares her personal faith story and outlines her thoughts on what it means to be a Catholic woman. She is a passionate and at times very informal/conversational writer, but digs deep and refuses to be caged by vapid “women’s topics.” I admire her clarity, compassion, commitment, and charity through many difficulty topics. Definitely geared toward Catholic women, but I think can resonate with and challenge others too. I will definitely be reading this more than once over the years because it is packed full of depth and truth bombs. Honestly refreshing and encouraging to read.Service, leadership, women, faith, action, humility, love, courage, Christianity.“Catholic feminists believe in uplifting other women, even those who make us want to roll our eyes. We can’t love only people who agree with us, although wouldn’t that be nice? We have to love the people who don’t agree with us too.”

If I could give this book ten stars...Received this book Friday and with kids, dogs, husbands and family obligations galore, I was finished with it by Sunday afternoon! The author hits hard on all of the topics that cause me to hold the Church at arms length. This book is a call-to-love/battle for Catholic gals to be who God created them to be. It’s an assurance, through scriptural references and quotes from beloved popes and saints, that being an empowered woman is absolutely God-approved. I will be gifting this book to every girl I know, especially teenagers who are encountering the conflict of what they see on TV and social media and what they know about their faith. This ONE book will set their paths straight! Phenomenal!
