Can I Get a Witness?: Thirteen Peacemakers, Community-Builders, and Agitators for Faith and Justice by Charles Marsh,Shea Tuttle,Daniel P. Rhodes Review

This book has wrecked my whole world! These stories are so inspiring, thought-provoking, and convicting! I’ve now ordered about 10 more books by some of the people featured in this one. The Lord has given us all a voice and we need to make sure we’re using it to further His kingdom. Rise up, Church...we’re not doing our part!

How can the church embody its theology in the midst of racial and economic inequality? In Can I Get a Witness? Thirteen Peacemakers, Community Builders, and Agitators for Faith and Justice, a variety of authors, professors and theologians share the impact a diverse group of Christian activists had on American history in the early 1900’s. The prophetic voices of these nonviolent leaders of social justice still reverberate today, proving relevant, timely and revolutionary. Each highly researched chapter utilizes engaging storytelling to relate the life of a champion of economic, social, or racial injustice. The portraits include seven men and six women who were Protestant and Catholic, gay and straight, white, African American, Japanese American, Mexican American and Native American. At first glance, this book is best suited to academic readers with a focus on social justice. But Can I Get a Witness? could be used by small groups and book clubs, adult Sunday School classes and leadership development as a springboard for conversations about what it means to actually live as a lover of Jesus in the world.

I really enjoyed the thought-provoking chapters in this book. Each one should a new light on how life could be .... well written and raises a lot of questions .

In this compilation of stories about change activists, you will be inspired to action! Some of the people in this book are widely know such as Doris Day, Ella Baker and Cesar Chavez, others are not as known but just as remarkable. Their backgrounds are just as varied as their religious convictions and the causes that they championed. The stories about regular people who did anything but regular are articulated beautifully by the 13 different authors featured. Something that sets this book apart from others is a podcast series is available free of charge that has a live interview with each author. Shea Tuttle, one of the editors of the book, has a beautiful conversation with each author that helps us go even deeper into the personal life of the activists featured in the book. These are delightful and enlightening to listen to wherever podcasts are available. The editors of this book are a part of something larger at UVA called, The Project on Lived Theology. They set out to celebrate the tradition of Christian social progressives in the United States and certainly exceeded that lofty goal! Thank you for sharing the history of these pioneers in social justice that is much needed in these trying times!
