I am a third grade teacher and so when I learned about this book, about a blue manatee who runs for class president, I had to pick it up. During the year, my class has a mock election where they vote on their favorite candy, and have to "campaign" for the Choice they want to win. It's one of their favorite lessons so of course they loved this book!More importantly, this children's book teaches the important lesson of accepting and embracing the differences you have because those differences are what can qualify you for a task, not hold you back. The story is beautifully written and the illustrations are detailed and heartwarming. I loved this book at least as much as my students and I can't wait to share it with my class next year.
The book was wonderful! The title is so creative! I love the rhyming and the lessons the book taught. I am a former elementary teacher and feel every library should have this book and each teacher should read it to her class and discuss the lessons it teaches.
What an inspiring story for little ones and grown ups alike. Teaches kindness, confidence, and empathy. My son can’t read yet, but followed along with the beautiful pictures as I read and had so many insightful questions to ask!
Hugh Manatee for President is an adorable story with opportunities for teachers or parents to pull out multiple valuable lessons about accepting differences. Discussions can go as simply or as complex as the adult wants to while still connecting it to the cute little sea creatures!As a bonus, there’s a teachers guide in the back that outlines several possible word work and comprehension lessons.Will definitely be a staple in both my school and home library!!
This story is one of a kind! It’s so hard to feel happy with the skin you have, and this story does a great job at relating to children AND adults, being secure and confident in who you are. I love the story of empathy and confidence this author wants to tell all people. As a teacher and mother, I will consider this a forever book to read to my children!
