Clancy Sigal (who would later be the inspiration for Doris Lessing's 'Saul Green') is just back from fighting in the Second World War and an abortive solo attempt to assassinate Hermann Goering at the Nurenburg trials. Charming his way into a job as an agent with the Sam Jaffe agency, Sigal plunges into a chaotic Hollywood peopled by fast women, washed-up screenwriters, wily directors, and starstruck FBI agents trailing 'subversives'. He parties with the likes of Humphrey Bogart, Barbara Stanwyck, Tony Curtis and an anxious Peter Lorre, who becomes a drinking buddy. But this is the era of the Hollywood Blacklist and Sigal, like many of his contemporaries, is subpoenaed to testify before the HUAC. Will he give up the list of nine names, burning a hole in his pocket, to save his own skin? Hilarious, touching, intimate and revealing: Sigal’s memoir reads like a forgotten hardboiled detective novel and has all the makings of an instant classic.

Just got my pre-order this morning and sat down with my coffee and couldn't stop reading it. What a crazy, wild ride throughout a time and place -- Hollywood during the infamous Blacklist period. It feels as if he's telling you directly, what it WAS like -- actually what it IS like -- almost the present tense of then, but it's now. But then again no one could write about it honestly then, but Black Sunset reads as if he sent a pneumonic tube with dispatches back from then. Well there you go, a lot of thens and nows...and who would have predicted an oppressive political force taking over the land today...as it was then. His stories are hilarious -- after being blacklisted from Columbia Studios by Harry Cohn himself (he wasn't a writer yet, but was a story reader) -- Clancy Sigal miraculously gets a job as a young talent agent at the prestigious Jaffe Agency on the Sunset Strip. His boss/mentor, Mary Baker, was a pioneer because she was a partner in the agency as a woman -- and was a force of nature who spoke Yiddish (which came in handy in Hollywood to negotiate deals and schmooze) even though she was an Ivy League educated WASP. We all need a fun read now...this is it!

This is a very strange and hilarious book. Sigal is sort of a respectable Charles Bukowski type with a suit and a salary, and despite being named "Clancy" and having the FBI on his tail, he manages to juggle several beautiful and horny women including the sassy babe who is the "office manager". The cutthroat world of Hollywood is illuminated in a small way, which is the virtue of this book and why you should read it. His realism is such that you can hear heels scuffing across the hardwood floors. There is more sex than drinking but there is not enough drinking nor enough sex, and too much FBI. I guess in the days of "Dragnet" the FBI still mattered, and had sufficient agents to deploy on people like Clancy. Look him up and you'll find that his life was far more interesting than this vignette would suggest, although I'm disappointed to learn he had a long affair with the dreadful Doris Lessing.

Sigal mentions that my father, Jennings Lang had his balls shot off. Well, if that were true, would I be writing this review? Also, Wanger didn't have a jury trial. My guess is the author played pretty loose with the facts. So, if you can read it as a broad interpretation using real names and events, it can be a fun read.

This is clearly a novel, not a memoir. Among some of the other things in the book that will set-off a perceptive reader's BS detector, the novel's protagonist, Clancy Sigal, just happens to have a personal harem of girlfriends, who are all smart, sexy and share advanced attitudes about sexual politics that are at least 20 years ahead of the mid-1950s, when the events in Sigal's book are supposed to be taking place. Sigal's mere presence acts like some kind of sexual catnip to his girlfriends; they jump into bed with him at the drop of a hat. If you look at the photo of Sigal published with his obituary, you'll see that Clancy Sigal was fairly unpreposessing to look at. In one of the most outrageously unlikely scenes in the book, Sigal crashes his car while fleeing from two FBI agents surveilling him for his pro-Communist activities while one his girlfriends is riding with him. When they get back to Sigal's apartment, she strips down, and as he examines her injuries, she becomes aroused and they make furious love. It's laughable.

Consider this book a comic novel. It is not a memoir. Or rather, it is a romp by a man who was afflicted by paranoia and depression during most of his life.
