Dombey and Son by Charles Dickens,David Timson,Naxos Audiobooks Review

What a book. I always suit up when it's time to read Dickens, because it's never a casual experience. One must pay attention. Aside from the scattered passages of detailed descriptions and lists (it wouldn't be Dickens without a big helping of that), every part of this book was linked critically to the next development. It is the story of Paul Dombey, a man of unparalleled business abilities but completely lacking in compassion and warmth. He is blessed with a son, who is the only person of meaning to him (to enhance his legacy), and spends long hours sketching a glorious future in business for him and Paul junior. Never mind that he has a perfectly lovely daughter, Florence, who longs for love or even acknowledgment from her father. A parallel story line evolves as we meet the old proprietor of a nautical shop, Sol Gills, and his nephew Walter Gay. Walter helps Florence one day when she is lost in London's darker districts, and is eventually hired by Paul Dombey Sr. The lives of these two families--the aristocratic Dombeys and the humble Gills/Gay household--continue to brush up against one another throughout the book. The most fascinating character to me, however, is Paul Dombey Sr.'s second wife, the stunningly beautiful Edith (wife #1 died in childbirth with little Paul). I was prepared to dislike Edith, but Dickens did an enormously successful job with her. She was not a shallow beauty. She loved her stepdaughter Florence deeply, and made significant sacrifices on her behalf. I thought Edith was magnificent in character -- beautiful but flawed, proud but vulnerable.Another compelling character is the wicked Mr. Carker, who is often described by Dickens as having a cat-like demeanor but who felt like a slithering serpent to me. Although Paul Dombey is villainous in his complete emotional bankruptcy, Carker is consciously and strategically evil.A third story line involves the lowly and corrupt rag-woman, Mrs. Brown, and her daughter Alice, who has recently returned from a penal colony. These two women help the novel reach its denouement and take its final direction. With all the tragic developments throughout this book, it is brought to an uplifting conclusion. I only wish I could have followed Edith's scandalous adventures in greater detail. Dickens is such a master.

A hard-hearted father, an angelic daughter, a vengeful wife with a past, hopes placed in children who do not survive to adulthood--all the classic situations and characters we expect from this beloved author. Add a deep belief in redemption through love and forgiveness and you get to the heart of the book. It is intriguing and suspenseful, if a bit long, but then so is all of Dickens. What a serial it would make! Reading these 19th Century authors makes me wish they could return to see the movies and TV dramas they inspired. We are fortunate to have their books. Now: about this Kindle Edition. I bought the illustrated, deluxe version. Unfortunately, the Kindle screen doesn't let you view the images in a large enough format to see what's going on. For all one can make out, A gloomy interior or a London fog is all they show.Written on Charles Dickens' 200th Birthday, December 31, 2012Happy Birthday!

Does Dickens ever disappoint? Having read all of his major works I'm now on to the somewhat less well-known novels and Dombey and Son was a delightful reading experience. No one writes about the humanity of man with his compassion and even the "villains" of this story are drawn with a complexity any modern writer would envy. Even at 950 pages I would have been eager to see the story continue and follow the characters further. On a side note, this Penguin edition has about 40 of the original 'Phiz' illustrations which I found fun to compare to my mental images.

This Dickens novel was an effort to read, but for the most part, I enjoyed it. Many of the themes are still relevant today - the role money, power, and pride have on relationships seems to be a timeless subject. At times the book seemed to have too many characters with too many subplots, and so seemed to be a bit tiresome. I think my library has a DVD of a miniseries that was made of this book, and so I’m looking forward to watching it and seeing how it compares to the book.

A tremendous work of art, brilliantly read by Frederick Davidson. This is so moving, it will stay with you for weeks. The characterizations are unique and thrillingly wrought. Satisfying on every level. May be even better than Copperfield and Nickelby. The trials of the youngsters are much more subtle and intellectually interesting than the normal hunger, cold and want. This is a psychological masterpiece.
