I will admit that I was very seldom drawn to read books about the Revolutionary War but I wanted very much to support my dear friend who has now published what is his second novel "Saving Washington." His description of his new novel drew me in because it took place in Baltimore, my home town, and had a very special story to tell about Baltimore's history and a friendship between two young soldiers - one black and one white - who managed to not only be friends during this turbulent time but to also be part of this least known but most important battle in Brooklyn and Baltimore's role in it. Yes, it is based on a true event but wrapped in beautifully and sensitively written fiction with glimpses of a Baltimore that I can easily imagine. I highly recommend this book to not only those who have a passion for novels in this genre but also for anyone who wants a reason to be reminded that we all have things within us that can make us great and that greatness may not be immediately recognized - but one day with the help of one person it will.

Saving Washington is a novel telling of an actual event in American history that needed to be told. We often take for granted that our Revolutionary rag-tag soldiers were unbeatable, but we rarely get exposed to those events that required great sacrifice when confronting the well-trained and equipped British military machine. This novel tells of such an event, an event of sacrifice, which allowed General George Washington to escape capture and preserve his army to continue the fight for the freedom of our great country. There are a number of passages in this novel that will bring tears to your eyes and make you respect, even more, the efforts put forth by the volunteer colonial regiments who helped to create the United States of America.As a novel, Mr. Formant condensed the battles described in this book in order to demonstrate the many hurtles that the colonial forces needed to confront. It is a quick read, but one that will leave a lasting impression regarding the hardships, friendships, and difficult decisions that needed to be taken during this battle in order to preserve the colonial forces.And, a very special "hats-off" to the men of the Maryland regiment that saved General Washington and his army. We are free today because they offered themselves for our freedom. (Every Marylander should read this! Among others!!)

Saving Washington is a fascinating well told story. My interest in this particular historical moment was piqued by the idea of the story being told through the eyes of two young friends who joined the fight. I enjoyed the fast pace of the plot and all the twists and turns. I was definitely hooked, after a few chapters. The historical insights and descriptions were lovely. I would recommend Saving Washington to adults as well as young adult readers. The author, Chris Formant has uncovered a gem of a story that needed to be told.

In Saving Washington, Chris Formant paints a picture of life in the American colonies at a pivotal point in the Revolutionary War, following the amazing story of the 1st Maryland Regiment from conception though the Battle of Brooklyn in a way that so wonderfully expresses the raw emotion of the moment.The book brings to life a number of historical figures in an accessible way . It reads like a movie at times, which arguably might be the only way to tell a story as heroic as that of the Maryland 400. Certainly I'm not the first person who has spent most of their lives living in Maryland and New York without much knowledge of the 1st Maryland Regiment's role in the Battle of Brooklyn, and as any good work of historical fiction should, Saving Washington leaves me eager to delve deeper.

A friend recommended this book and since I have family in the Baltimore/Maryland area, I gladly accepted the recommendation. The authors' storytelling, of both historical fiction and character non fiction take the reader on a ride. Patriotism, friendship, family, war, heartache, love and loss are all center stage of the journey inward and outward of "Saving Washington". The author's deep understanding of this historical period in time, embellished with his own creative version of story telling, the central and supporting characters in a time and place forgotten or never known made for a great story. You will enjoy this book no matter what level of interest one may have in the time period or place, this was a great read!
