Beast by Chawna Schroeder Review

I came to know the author a little in a class she taught on weaving faith into fiction. Curiosity led me to her book, Beast, which I bought and paid for (i.e., this is not a complimentary copy in exchange for a review). And reading it led me to a profound enjoyment of the tale.Although the author told me she had written the book a long time ago and hoped she had grown better at writing since then, this book is a fine testimony (no pun intended) to her very real skill at creating a story in which God--and the Adversary (aka Satan)--live and breathe on every page, although I don't believe either is ever mentioned by name.As the author's information states, "Beast is a...fairy tale about a feral child." Unnamed, raised among the dogs in a cruel master's pen, the child views herself as a defective dog. She doesn't realize her own humanity. Everyone calls her "beast," (noun) or "it" (pronoun) and this is how she views herself.Until one day she meets the daughter of a king. The princess names her "Sarah," a name Beast cannot accept. The princess offers her friendship and love; the king offers Beast a chance for adoption into his family and the title of princess. Beast cannot accept this either, because obviously, a beast is unworthy of such honors.I'm leaving out most of the external story in favor of the internal one, but both are fascinating. I won't go deeply into the external story except to say that it's action-filled, full of good guys who don't always seem to be good, bad guys who are downright awful, and good guys who are even better than they seem. There's betrayal, killing, bravery and sacrifice. And in the middle of it all is a poor Beast who has no idea why this is happening or why a king took an interest in a beast like her.I don't want to spoil the ending, but I can say with some assurance that what is perfectly portrayed--without religion, prayers, long philosophical dissertations, or anything preachy--is a picture of the love of God that reaches down into the heart of every sinner and tells them to eat at his table with him. This is a good book, but don't take my word for it. Read it yourself. Looking forward to reading more by Chawna Schroeder and maybe taking a few more of her classes too.

The only reason I'm not giving this a full five stars is because I spent about a third of the book being distracted by how confused I was about what Beast was and what she looked like. Which, was kind of the point, but made it hard to get into the story. Also HOW Beast ended up as she is at the beginning is never answered, although based on when we finally get a good idea of what she looks like, it can be partially guessed. It basically just took awhile for me to suspend my disbelief enough to really get into the story. But even before that, the writing was engaging enough and the story interesting enough to keep me interested past my confusion. And then it really pulled me in. For what is in many ways allegory, I didn't find the plot completely predictable, and things often didn't work out in the most obvious way, which I really appreciate. The message about identity and God's love is so good, so well-done, and beautiful. I nearly teared up a couple times. It reminded me of an adult, fleshed-out version of a fairytale or fable, and I enjoyed that.

I zoomed through the first half of this. The premise alone was good and the promise of underlying meaning intrigued me further. The problem at around the middle wasn't so much the story, but just that I was hoping to start to see more growth in Sarah at that point. Instead there's a lot of back and forth in circumstances that ended up feeling tedious to me. I wasn't really sure what to hope for, there wasn't much growth in the characters, and it's painful to read. Again, maybe I just had too much expectation for where I wanted it to go. Others may find the turns the story takes interesting. 5 stars for the premise, the writing is well done, the twists just brought down the enjoyment overall for me.

When the Master is killed and Beast is dragged away from the only home she ever knew. Along the journey she meets another girl named Tabby, who shows Beast her first human kindness. But Beast has also made an enemy. Challenging "Two Eyes" as Beast dubs him, was a massive mistake. He will do anything to possess her, and conquer her. To live under his hand is a fate worse than death, but can she handle the alternative?Tabby and her father offer her a place in their "pack". they don't seem to realize that she is Beast. She does not deserve such kindnesses. When bad choices threaten to tear everything apart, and no one seems trustworthy, she must decide whether to fight for herself, or for her pack.Is she Beast, as everyone has said? Or could she possibly be...Sarah?The character of Beast has a very unusual and delightfully fresh view of the world. Her unique perspective is quite fun to read. The rest of the character cast here are very black and white. You won't find any truly "grey" characters in this one.I was quite surprised to find that this book was a Biblical allegory. This one is definitely one of the few truly good ones I have read.Beast is a short, but beautiful story of trust and forgiveness, with a strong redemption thread woven through.Safety ratings:Romance: surprisingly, nothing at all.Drinking/Drugs: clean.Violence: Plenty. there are chases, fights, beating, whippings, and "Hunts" where the villain makes a game out of hunting the main heroine down to capture or kill her. The author does keep it tasteful though, little blood is mentioned.Other: Slavery and the question of what makes us human are both briefly touched upon.
