When you haven't grown up in systemic poverty or been subject to institutional neglect at every turn, it's conveniently easy to ascribe values and render judgement on those who have not been as fortunate. What's harder is to understand how this can happen and admit that your worldview may not be as complete as you once thought. Even more difficult is recognizing how society chooses to label an entire segment of the population as broken and unredeemable. Chris's story challenges those notions at every turn and will force you to re-examine how you view our criminal justice system. In the few short years that Chris has been home, he has accomplished what many achieve in a lifetime, if at all. He's done it on his own merits and with a drive and sense of purpose that is truly inspiring. The best part is that he's only getting started.It would be easy to see Chris as an aberration, that one-in-a-million who actually made good. The reality is that there are hundreds of thousands more Chris's and Christines in our society, just waiting for the opportunity to prove that they have learned, grown, and are eager to make a positive contribution to their world. Wow! What a remarkable man! Chris Wilson talks the talk and walks the walk. I read this book in four days, and my 15-year-old son read it in two days. (I took his phone. This was a requirement to get the phone back.😉) He never complained though.Just when I thought that Michelle Obama wrote the best Memoir of the 21st Century, here comes Chris Wilson with a close second. Two antithetical stories with an awe-inspiring parallel message of hard work, dedication, discipline, and perseverance.Chris Wilson grew up surrounded by poverty, gangs, police brutality, and witnessing his mother being domestically abused. As a young teenager, he became a product of his environment on the mean streets of D.C.. He was ultimately charged as an adult as a teenager, and sentenced to life in Prison at ”Patuxent” Penitentiary. This is where his growth would begin.We often hear the saying ”whatever you choose to do in life, be the best that you can be.” Well, Chris Wilson took that message to heart and became the best prisoner that anyone could ever be. In prison, he managed to let go of the anger, took responsibility for his actions, didn't make excuses, found a mentor, created a master plan, and stuck to it. He educated himself, learned several languages, and inspired other fellow inmates to follow in his footsteps.After his release, he stuck to his masterplan and put his money where his mouth is by returning to the community that he helped to decimate. He started businesses, created jobs, continued his education and is continuously giving back to his community. This man is doing so much until I can't keep up. Is the penal system broken? Absolutely. However, this man keeps going. At one point, I just wanted to reach inside the book, give him a hug and say, ” that's enough my brother, you’ve done more than enough.” But I doubt very seriously if he’d quit.Michelle Obama and Chris Wilson are my new heroes. They both make me want to be smarter, and they make me go out into the community and do more.Thank you, Mr. Wilson, for this inspirational piece. Now I have to ask the readers, ”what’s you masterplan? What’s your End game?

What an incredible first book by Chris Wilson. In the courageous act of sharing his story and himself he shows all of us the power and potential of change; he models for us all and inspires a rare type of personal growth and self investigation; he challenges us to see ourselves in new lights as we are taken on his journey, and to consider the chances we give others. And through all of this, he tells an amazing and honest story that’s hard to put down.

Through three parts, Chris Wilson weaves you through the trauma, adversity, and outright systemic failure that he has faced throughout his life. To that end, the level of inspiration and empathy it has the ability to create, especially for those who are not as aware of the depths of trauma operating in our society, is massive. Even bigger than the learnings in how faulty and filled with cracks our system is, are Chris Wilson's prescription which he calls the Master Plan, that I believe will be a scalable plan for those other Chris' out there who might be in his shoes but not have been given a pathway to a life they had been told they couldn't have. This book isn't just an inspiring story, it has the ability to entirely change the way humans who read it journey through life.

I love this author's awesome story, which I originally saw on the Today Third Hour - my new favorite show. I admit that all I cared about was the list of books he read as he worked hard to turn his life around. If you have a list in your book about anything, I'll probably purchase it. Thank you. But it's much more than just a list, it's a life guide and about taking the worst possible issues people can experience and rising from that and HOW one did so. I think so many books like this lack that how, what, who, where, when... the why is evident. So many do not have even mediocre lives once experiencing incarceration but this man is an exception and is telling you how. What a great story.
