One of the few who did was William Magear Tweed, known more widely as Boss Tweed, one of the most famous and corrupt - politicians in American history. In the 19th century, Tweed was an influential mover and shaker for Tammany Hall, the infamous Democratic political machine in New York City and the driving force behind the party’s success in the city for decades. Although Tweed never technically held a position of power in New York City’s government, he essentially ran the city and its finances between 1868 and 1871 as a political boss of Tammany, and even before that, Tweed would make a name for himself among politicians as an alderman who had a penchant for figuring out how to profit from political situations. By the end of his life, people across the state commonly referred to his operation as the Tweed Ring. While Tweed was at one point among the wealthiest men in the country during the 19th century, he would die in prison thanks to the illegal accumulation of this wealth. Over the course of his time at Tammany Hall, he would steal millions of dollars from state taxpayers, and he was known for extorting large sums of money for political favors. He was finally brought down by the media in a crusade of sorts that would set the precedent for how the press would deal with political scandals for years to come.

I read this e-book about Boss Tweed several months ago. Before I read this e-book, I read the e-book Doomed by Cartoon: How Cartoonist Thomas Nast and The New York Times Brought down Boss Tweed and His Ring of Thieves. Therefore, I had an excellent idea of the broad with of criminal activity he supposedly committed. He ran a successful criminal political enterprise for a number of years until his arrogance finally caught up with him. The wedding of his daughter Mary Amelia was so over-the-top extravagant that he aggravated both the media and the public. I found it interesting that no one but Boss Tweed went to prison for his criminal escapades. I believe that this e-book provides a great history on the life and the methods of this politician-criminal.

Boss Tweed is the name that everyone remembers as the face of corruption and graft during the Gilded Age in New York City. He was also the fall guy, and just part of a larger circle of corruption going on at the time. In 50 short pages, with several illustrations, the book does a nice job in providing succinct information about the life and times of Tweed in a balanced manner. Nicely done.

It is amazing to me no one was punished for their corruption. Illinois today mirrors the organization as to who gets nominated, who gets to be a judge and who controls the finances. The people are just there to be taxed.

This was a well written book that I found easy and enjoyable to read. I never cease to be amazed by the lengths politicians will go to gain money and power. Lot of well documented details packed into a fairly short book.

Shabby politicians are not new to the game. The sad part is that they are re-elected time and again. Whose fault is that?
