Fairest (An Unfortunate Fairy Tale Book 2) by Chanda Hahn Review

Wilhelmina Grimm (publicly known as Mina Grime), is the great-great-lots more greats granddaughter of Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm, better known as the brother's Grimm. Generally known, the brother's were great fairy-tale writers that traveled the world and wrote incredible stories. Less well-known is the fact that they didn't actually write these stories, they were a part of them. Each story being a quest that they completed for the fae (fairies) and the ruling King and Queen of the fae, known as the Fates. Wilhelm and Jacob made a deal with the fae to stop the evil fae from coming to the human plane and feasting on innocent humans. The Fates agreed, so long as Wilhelm and Jacob could complete all of the fairy tale story quests. The brothers agreed to the terms, unaware that if they failed to finish all of the quests then the agreement would fall to their children. Now, generations later, Mina has been bestowed the family "curse" to complete the fairy tale quests that the brother's originally agreed to. Another unfortunate side-effect of the deal that the Fates didn't exactly explain was that whenever one of the Grimms died, all of the quests started over. All of the quests had to be completed and fulfilled by one individual.Generations of Grimms have fought against the fae, trying to overcome the story, complete the tales, and ride the human world (and their family) of the fae curse. Mina, sheltered and unaware of the family curse due to her mother's constant vigilance, moving, and even going as far as changing their family name and cutting ties with all known relations, has now stumbled into her family curse. The storybook fairy tales and the family curse have finally caught up with her and her family and Mina realizes if her family is ever going to be free or able to live their lives (and further more if she wants to protect her 8 year-old mute brother from inheriting the curse in her place) she has to fulfill the family curse and somehow beat what not other Grimm has been able to before.Mina, descendant of the brothers, sees how things can change over the years and just like when playing telephone with friends, things can get lost over time and details can slip away or become skewed. After surviving her first year with the curse and several quests, Mina now has Jared by her side-someone she isn't sure she can trust and someone she doesn't know if she can survive without. Still torn over losing her crush (who played the Prince in one of her quests), as his and all humans memories were erased about the true events that take place during her quests, Mina is left to face the stories with only herself and Jared knowning the truth about the things she does and faces. Now she is facing even more dangerous and deadly odds as she tackles more fairy tales, this time the tale of Snow White or Sleeping beauty or both? It's hard to tell which tales are which and which just merge together making for a very crazy and unpredictable way of overcoming the odds.Good book recommend for females, teenage age, high school level. Deals with subjects of magic, fantasy, fitting in, communication, and understanding others differences.

I'm reading this with my ten year old. I think the book is good for this age group although I skip reading certain words describing kisses. This is a book about the fairy tale world revealed to Mina Grimm and the Grimoire which contains all the old stories. She lives out parallels of the stories in her own modern life and has to somehow become the hero and complete the stories to prevail. The enemy not only sets her up to fail but also likes to toy with her emotions so that throughout this book in the series she is struggling with jealousy so strong it's difficult for her to keep her friends close and finish the tales. The level of maturity of the romance doesn't match with the rest of the content of the story causing some parts to be awkward to read aloud and gets skipped so that's why I gave it three stars.

*spoilers*Fairest is the second novel is the Unfortunate FairyTale series by Chanda Hahn. Grim vs monsters, as all Grimm spinoffs go. But this one is particularly special, because this monster-Hunter is a 16 yo girl with a magical book that traps fae inside of it. And she's cursed. In the first installment of the series, Mina, the main character is the embodiment of chaos. Everything goes wrong for her, but then suddenly goes right as she is pulled into a magical, and very deadly, world. In its sequel, Mina's happy ever after is gone, stolen by the force that drives her curse, Story, and all involved forget anything that occured involving magic and fae, including Minas brief blossoming love with a certain Brody Charmichael. Instead, the Story manipulates her next quest by hitting her where it hurts....Brody and her best friend Nan Taylor.Pain and fear get pushed to anger, jealously, and even a little bit of hate as Mina, our usually so honorable and brave savior, becomes the enemy of the new fairy tale is trapped in.While being apportioned against those she loves,Mina also becomes side swiped by new information that changes her part in the curse, that changes how she feels about her handsome helper,Jared, and his significance, when his mother, Queen of the Fae appears and demands Mina's help to save her missing son.Nina was too nice, too easily manipulated, and too naive in the first book. Despite her darker side emerging, it also gives Mina an understanding she wouldn't have found without her giving in. Confidence that wouldn't have come without her feeling she deserves more. And strength she would have realized without her having to fight anarchist herself to save those she loves.Overall, great improvement inasmuch more enticing way to hook us into wanting more.

Ok, so before I purchased all the books in this series, I thought to myself, "what if I don't like the rest of the books ?" I convinced myself since I loved the first few books I read by the author, I would love the rest. I was so wrong! I found myself getting a headache as I read book 2. Book one started out like a cute underdog love story, though the ending was a tad bit tragic. I thought it would work out in book two. Instead, Mina went from a girl trying to be brave to a sad, scared, clueless, jealous and hateful girl. I found myself almost reverting to old habits by skimming thr rest of the book or just start up jumping to the end, but I told myself to give Mina some more time to get it together. The ending was really good, but I was disappointed at how the book dragged on to get there. Well, I'm not giving up! I think this author is genius and love how she has taken fairy tales we all love and giving it a twist. On to the next book.
