Our Nation's No. 2: The Rising Influence of America's Modern Vice Presidency by Charles Denyer Review

Denyer's book takes us on a historical journey about the job of being the 2nd most powerful person of the United States. I feel like we sometimes forget about the VP when thinking about the White House. This role was designed by our founding fathers as a sort of "president in reserve", and I really enjoyed this book as it not only taps into the importance the VP plays but it walks us through how it got that important role throughout history.Denyer's book covers history from the beginning of the United States and how the VP role was elected all the way to Nixon's time as vice presidency which was considered to be when the modern VP was born. I enjoyed learning more about the bonds ( or lack there of) between president and vice president. We get to learn how trust and respect is the glue that holds the relationship together and creates a great partnership. Which isn't always quite there.I really enjoyed reading this book as I was able to learn a lot about the Vice Presidency and stories that were left out of the main historical books. I highly recommend this read for anyone who is a history buff or anyone who is interested in Politics. I was poli sci major in college and I enjoyed learning more about the VP and different stories I hadn't heard about before. He also touches on more recent history: Obama and Biden, Trump and Pence. Which I loved. We not only got the VP history from the beginning of our democracy but also our recent history and why we are where we are today.

Author Charles Denyer, with degrees from University of Texas at Austin, and Masters degrees in Information and Telecommunications Systems and Nuclear Engineering from Johns Hopkins University and University of Tennessee at Knoxville, is Senior Managing Partner at NDBGovSec, an organization within the NDNB family of firms specializing in national security critical infrastructure protection, information security & cybersecurity for U.S. and EU based organizations. His initial book was THE DOBERMAN PINSCHER RESOURCE GUIDE. His latest books delve into the history and facts about the position of the Vice Presidency in the US – NUMBER ONE CONSERVATORY CIRCLE: THE HOME OF THE VICE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, and OUR NATION’S NO.2: THE RISING INFLUENCE OF AMERICA’S MODERN VICE PRSIDENCYThere probably is no better resource for the development of the role of Vice President that Charles Denver. Yet add to that qualification the ability to write a fascinating book with fine prose and this has become the definitive resource for not only political historians, but for us all.In his Preface, Charles relates the since of importance of this topic: ‘The American vice presidency has come of age. An office once deemed insignificant and irrelevant has witnessed a political makeover in the last forty years, propelling our nation's second-in-command into the spotlight like never before. An official residence in a grand Queen Anne-style home on the grounds of the US Naval Observatory. A battalion of US Secret Service agents watching the vice president's every move. Plush air travel on Air Force Two, and motorcades of black SUVs and limousines fit for a president. Welcome to the modern American vice presidency, a position of power thanks to the little-known Georgia governor-turned-president Jimmy Carter and his No. 2 Walter Mondale.’Succinctly, Charles Denyer then surveys this often-misunderstood role from its beginnings with George Washington and John Adams and carries his study to the present day. Supporting his fine writing are photographs of his subject matter – a true peek into the unknown aspects of the development of the vice president’s increasingly important role. Accompanied by the resources of his research and writing with a fine sense of perspective, this book is immensely readable – and important, Grady Harp, May 19

Charles Denyer is captivating as he describes the importance of the Vice Presidency and the era in which this important seat became a necessity. Our Nation’s No. 2: The Rising Influence of America’s Modern Vice Presidency is full of interesting facts and photos, educating the common citizen of this little-known office that doesn’t get the attention the President does. Denyer outlines the jobs the Vice President overlooks, and the support given to the President. I found Our Nation’s No. 2: The Rising Influence of America’s Modern Vice Presidency absolutely fascinating. Charles Denyer’s expertise and connections in and around the political elite are obvious, yet everyone can appreciate his well-written book. He unlocks a world few have seen while education the population about behind the office. History lovers and political enthusiasts will enjoy this book and interested in other books by this author. Well done and highly recommended read. I will probably require my high school students to read this book as there is much to be gained by this author.

After reading Number One Observatory Circle, I just could not pass up the chance to read this one too. The book is a masterpiece. Charles Denyer used his experience and connection in politics to gather as much information as he could about the office of the vice presidency. This book further explores all those that have served as vice presidents, mainly focusing on their relationships with their presidents.Reading this book, I came across a lot of “Oh!” moments. Some of the ways in which these vice presidents were treated by their presidents left me gasping. I would have never though stuff like that happened behind the scenes. In addition, the pictures that are shared in this book make you further appreciate the office of the vice president. Many thanks to the author for such an amazing job!
