This beautifully illustrated picture book is appropriate for preschool through elementary level children. The colorful pictures depict diversity in gender and ethnicity that reflects many public school classrooms today. Hallinan walks children through typical situations that children encounter and the emotions brought up in these situations---anger, sadness, insecurity, jealousy, and compassion. In each situation, the children are given ways to talk to themselves and breathe while articulating and changing these emotions. These gentle instructions in the use of breath help children release tension in their bodies and respond more appropriately in their peer interactions. I taught elementary children for 33 years. I would have loved a tool like this one to help me to guide them.

The author Claire Hallinan really knows this subject well and is a master at showing kids how to gain control over emotions if they are angry, sad, jealous or throwing temper tantrums.The illustrations are beautiful and depict fully the emotions as described in the book."My Breath Loves Me" will get your kids to calm down, take a deep breath, while reducing their anxiety and worried states."This is a book every household should have, and a book every kid should read for ten minutes a day.Children in the world and their caretakers will appreciate knowing that they possess a lifetime tool given to them when they were born and that they are able to learn when and how to use it."A definite recommended resource for your family.
This is a wonderful book that would benefit children long before being in school. It would be perfect to begin teaching children about their emotions and how to handle them in a constructive way. There is not enough guidance for children in society or home settings anymore on appropriate ways to handle emotions.I think I might expand a little on the part when another child gets praise and how to handle that, by addressing that it makes me feel happy inside when I make someone else happy by giving them praise too.Thank you to the author for an insightful teaching book for young children. I will be reading this to many children beginning with my own grandchildren!
Anyone who works with children (or adults for that matter) knows they can run through the hammer of emotions during the day. They cannot always identify their feelings, and may act out as a result. The descriptions and ideas in this book can help children get to know their feelings and learn what to do instead of reacting. The breathing techniques are easy to do and, with practice, can be done by the children independently.This book is well-written with realistic examples of events in a child’s day that can be upsetting. The pictures are beautiful, too. I think this book will be very helpful to many families.
