As a young man living in rural Kansas in the 1940s, Charles Novak took a job with the federal government—not because he liked the work but because he heard it paid well. That job shaped his life in ways he could never have imagined. As a surveyor for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey, Charles was tasked with measuring the unmapped American landscape. Over the years this would take him from being eaten up by mosquitoes in Alaska, to eating steak and lobster on oil rigs in Louisiana. His career became even more adventurous when his family later hit the road with him, making their home in a caravan of trailers as the survey team traversed the nation. The measurements taken by Charles and the survey team eventually would go on to help build today's GPS technology. However, such a contribution was the furthest thing from the minds of Charles and his family as they experienced life on the road during a time of astounding change in American life. From segregated trains, to Cold War military bases, and back to Kansas, Charles's family found that home is more than a place on a map.

Charles Novak's stories remind me of my mother's... such as growing up in Oklahoma in the early 1900's and running after a strange thing called an automobile so she could experience that new smell called "engine exhaust."I thoroughly enjoyed reading his vignettes of a long life well led; embracing the unexpected challenges and changes in his life, told in such a way as to leave me wanting more, including more about the Geodetic Survey.
I loved the true story. Traveling with the US Coast & Geodetic Survey was once my life. I could relate to his experience & was friends with some of the people included in this book.
The author does a great job of describing the life of so many hundreds who worked in the field for the Coast & Geodetic Survey, now the National Geodetic Survey up to the development of the Global Positioning System. These entire families were the backbone of the development of our national infrastructure that supports the most accurate mapping and charting. The vast majority came from small rural communities and their contributions as great civil servants so often have went unrecognized.
This is a wonderful book for learning about the life of surveyor. I loved the author’s style of storytelling....Equal parts history, geography and family!
