Claire Dunphy's memoir is an easy flowing, joyous memoir done in a picaresque structure of abbreviated episodes that covered a 10 year period of her life. It was a decade of of profound self-discovery and realization, adventurous travel all over the world, and the meeting of people from many walks of life—many with the unifying bond of visions, signs, spirituality, and ceremonies to higher powers. It was a bond that brought her back time and again to her Plains Native American friends. The reality of her NYC life gradually diminishes as the recognition of the miracles of life take hold of her by way of investigating traditions long lost to contemporary civilization. She gives thanks for the miracles in many ways, chiefly with her painted stone circles that she gradually placed in locations virtually the world over—circles that remind us of the many kinds of animals, and plants, that have so greatly enriched our lives on mother Earth. I've never read anything like Becoming Earthwoman, and as another reviewer has said, the book is indeed difficult to put down.
This beautiful and deeply moving account of a search to find our connections to the earth we inhabit and the animals and plants we inhabit it with is truly inspiring. Our ancestors form the American Indians to the indigenous peoples of other lands that Claire explores are both wonderful and sad. To think how much we have lost in our dependence on technological advancement in terms of our alienation from nature. Thank you Claire for bringing this loss to our attention.
Claire Dunphy has written a memoir that is an unforgettable, impossible-to-put-down read.
