She became an art teacher in schools in Texas and South Carolina, honing her own craft as she taught her students. O'Keeffe never gave up her dream, no matter what obstacles she encountered--she knew she was meant to be an artist.

Very interesting and readable book about Georgia Okeeffe. I would recommend it to anyone who just wants to learn a little more about her life. I am not an art historian so I don’t know how factually correct it is. But it was a very interesting read.
Young Georgia lived on her family farm in Minnesota. She wasn't a huge fan of school, having determined in childhood that she would be an artist, but she also didn't want the life of a housewife. In the early 1900s, there were few choices for women, but luckily Georgia's family sacrificed to send her to schools where she was able to get some art instruction. She had enough talent and vision that her instructors thought she could be an instructor herself, leading to a variety of jobs in places across the US. Her family has relocated to Williamsburg, Virginia, but her father is struggling to keep everything afloat. Georgia continues to paint, explore what art means to her, come in contact with influential artists of the early twentieth century, and eventually establish her long and successful career.The brilliant part of Meyer's historical works is that she pays SUCH attention to details of every day life. This has always been why I adore historical fiction. What did people wear? How were women treated? What was it like teaching in a small town in the 1920s. Meyer puts in lots of these details, along with discussions of the larger issues in O'Keeffe's life. Like Girl with a Camera, this is an excellent portrait of a groundbreaking woman who did not let social mores of her time define her, so is timely motivation for young readers of today.
I had been wanting to know more about Georgia O'Keeffe after seeing some of her amazing works of the Southwest, one of my favorite places! Thank you for letting us in on her fascinating life. Though I say she developed as an artist, I loved reading that she always thought of herself as an artist, from a very young child and fought to become one at a time when it was not really encouraged. Her life had as many twists and turns as some of the roads in a Southwest reservation. I also loved hearing of the many mentors and helpers she had on her road to success. Encouraging to any type of artist trying to make their way through all the ups and downs there will certainly be!
I have read 2 biographies , and I classify Carolyn myer book as one of the the most loved by me. She answers why G. O . ' K. Wore black, when she paints in color.
