Tasting India: Heirloom Family Recipes by Christine Manfield Review

I have made five recipes from this book so far. They have all turned out very tasty. However, I noticed that several of the recipes had excessive addition of water. Also, if you follow the recipes word for word, they do not turn out looking anything like the photograph on the page.For example, the Black Pepper Chicken Fry turned out really tasty, however, the recipe contains at least one cup of water that is not necessary. The image for this recipe shows dry fried chicken drumsticks and thighs with a very dark, dry coating of spices. The actual result if you follow the recipe step by step is a moist, wet chicken dish with lots of watery sauce. I've made it multiple times now, and while it does taste very good, I'm disappointed that it doesn't match the photograph.

This is a beautifully printed and bound book. This is so much more than just an Indian cookbook. The recipes, stories and pictures transport you to various regions in India. A few recipes have ingredients not commonly available in the US, however there are so many that are easily made from items in the pantry. Cooking Indian food from this cookbook will be part travel, part adventure and a visual feast for the chef. This is a rare find in cookbooks and it is clear that Indian food and culture are her passion.

I read the reviews of this book and wondered how a non-native could create such hype with an Indian cookbook so I ordered a copy through our library. Then I discovered one of the most visually beautiful visits to India that anyone could hope have between the covers of a book.The real test would come by cooking up a few dishes and that proved equally satisfying as well. Then I had to track down a copy of own. This book is worth searching for.

Love this book! Starting with the brilliant cover- velvety, vibrant, enticing- just like Indian cuisine! The photography within is extraordinary and the recipes week explained by region and delicious. It's the most lovely cookbook I own!
