Through both prose and poetry, Celestine Salter celebrates the life of her father, Mack Salter, a man who has seen more than a century pass him by. This poignant work lets Mack speak directly to you and explain the many lessons he has learned from his 107 years spent in Conecuh County, Alabama. Mack, the son of a former slave, was born in 1904 near Evergreen, Alabama. From an early age, he understood the importance of oral and written history. His ancestors had passed down his predecessor’s true African name, and Mack continued the tradition. His parents had been born in an era when African Americans were forbidden from reading and writing. Mack, on the other hand, encouraged his children to make the most out of their opportunities for education. His daughter Celestine went on to become a schoolteacher and used her father’s lessons to inspire a new generation. Mack had a front row seat to the changing cultural and political attitudes toward African Americans and the historic civil rights movement. In addition to the story of Mack, his ancestors, and his descendants, Celestine’s work captures the spirit of this community and this tumultuous time in history.

It was easy reading. From a content perspective, it told about the community as well as the man.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book!! My great, great grandparents are Silas and Lucy Salter. My grandfather, Mack Salter is from Burnt Corn, AL and raised his family in Atmore. My mother was named Celestine Salter! 😳
I love this book! I'm a descendant of Jane Salter & Bill Grace through Wheeler Salter and his daughter Alice Salter. It was refreshing to see Cousin Mack's perspective, and also be able to learn about the personalities of our shared ancestors, and how he cared for and about them.
