The Girl in the Window: A Novel of Psychological Suspense by Renee Pawlish Review

I am a voracious reader. I hate to leave any book unfinished, and can usually get through to the end of anything. But after dragging myself through three chapters of this dreck, I will delete it from my Kindle with pleasure. That will be the only pleasure I will get from this book. I am completely at a loss to explain how it garnered so many 4- and 5-star reviews, particularly ones that cite "good writing." Short, choppy sentences with the most elementary vocabulary and excruciating detail. Characters who do not act or respond in the way a normal person would, and seem to have no motivation for what they do or say. A protagonist who is incredibly stupid, lazy, self-centered, nosy, gossipy, shallow, and completely lacking in any empathy or understanding of other people's feelings. And that's just in the first three chapters. I shudder to think what I would have endured if I had forced myself to read on.Please, learn from my experience and do not torture yourself by buying or borrowing this book.

I regret the time I wasted reading this book. I had high hopes initially, thinking that I was dealing with a deluded and unreliable narrator and that ultimately there would be a twist that would change the trajectory of the story. But, no. The story moves in a straight line from monotony to boredom. When the narrator questions her neighbors about the murder of another neighbor, the questions are so bizarre and her gall in asking them is so over the top, that I just kept believing she was crazy and her neighbors were humoring her. But, no. We are asked to believe that this wacky woman, who peers at the goings-on on her block through her window, is an amateur sleuth. Instead, she is a professional nuisance who solves a very pedestrian mystery. The author's writing is serviceable but nothing more. Don't bother.

I am a fan of Renee Pawlish's detective series - Reed Ferguson - and didn't know what to expect when beginning this new book, The Girl in the Window. I found it quite a departure from her usual writing. While there is a mystery in this book, there was little else in common with the Ferguson series. It begins with the girl in the window. She had everything she wanted: the handsome, well-to-do husband; the perfect house in the perfect neighborhood; the perfect gym. . Then her marriage fell apart - was it ever close to perfect? Was any of it? She stands in the window every morning and watches Caleb leave for work - the handsome neighbor with the beautiful home, wife, marriage - everything Amber wants including Caleb. Then it all falls apart. Is anything ever as it seems from the outside looking in? There is a murder. Was Amber involved? No spoilers here. I recommend this well written, interesting mystery and I hope Ms Pawlish continues to write more books like this one!

Amber Aldridge days dreams about her neighbors husband, Caleb McCormick. After all, her own husband Rick left her six months ago. Amber watches Caleb come and go to work every day from her window. Caleb is married to Erin, and Erin doesn't like Amber watching her husband. Then one day, Caleb doesn't go anywhere. Amber finds out from the only neighbor that likes her, Kayla, that Erin was killed. Everyone in the neighborhood is pointing their finger at Amber, because everyone knows how she feels about Caleb. Amber feels she must prove her innocence, so she starts digging into the activities of those in her neighborhood. The more she digs, the more things are brought to light that she never even suspected. You won't see the ending coming-----SURPRISE!

I have a hard time finding books to grab my interest from the start. (Altho all Renee's are good from start to finish). I had mixed feelings about the main character. Her attitude toward life was not one that I cared for. It made her shallow and a sell out but as the story goes on she redeems herself and becomes a woman to be friends with. There are twists and turns. You think you have it figured out and then BAM you don't and it's unexpected. If you like mystery thrillers with good characters. A story that has everything that makes a story good but one that you won't be offended by the words you read. This is a really good read! You won't be disappointed.
