This review is for those considering purchasing the Kindle edition of this commentary. The table of contents are keyed only to the Bible book itself, not to chapter or verse. Thus, if you want to see the commentary for chapter 25 of Genesis, you can only go to the first page of the commentary on Genesis and start paging forward. This commentary is totally unusable on a kindle for passage lookups. This should have been addressed by the publisher before ever committing to the kindle format.
The Expositor's Bible Commentary is a wonderful Bible commentary. This rendition is a two-volume set that covers the Old Testament (Hebrew Bible) and New Testament in two distinct books.Pros: This commentary set gives you the historical, cultural, linguistic, archaeological, and interpretive information you'd expect from this series but in an abridged format. For those who cannot afford the full set or who do not have the room the extra books this is a great investment that you will enjoy.Cons: None that I've found thus far.Overall: What you are getting is a great commentary that will certainly enrich your reading and understanding of the Bible. Enjoy!
I got this Commentary set based on the recommendation of the pastor who was teaching a class I was in. I've never done bible research before so this was a good way to get my feet wet. It is not too deep for a beginner like myself, but it gives enough detail and background to broaden your perspective and help you think critically about how you interpret the bible - a very important thing! i'd say for the average person like myself it's a good, handy biblical resource. Seems reliable, nothing I've read in it so far has set off any red flags (in terms of being too subjective). My mentality is that you can't be too careful in what you allow to influence your thinking - especially when it comes to scripture! I think I'll get good use out of this set, I'd recommend it.
I actually bought the set because I only had the New Testament version. I like the NT so much that I wanted the Old Testament and it was cheaper to buy a set than the OT by itself. It does a good job of giving the background of the scriptures in a form that you can understand.
Just what I was looking for. Last trip through the Bible I used Matthew Henry's concise commentary and wanted something different.This book does stretch my brain as a lot of words used are new to me but I like the deep thinking it provokes.
