The DNA of Democracy by Richard C. Lyons

Read Online and Download The DNA of Democracy by Richard C. Lyons. An American poet writes a compilation of historical vignettes, discerning the future of our democracy by rediscovering the combative, instructive, fascinating past of tyranny and democracy. Just as DNA is interwoven in every aspect of the human body, tyranny and democracy have their historically distinctive DNA that have shaped our democracy today. From Israel’s Ten Commandments, to the Athenian Constitution, to Rome’s Twelve Tables, to the overthrow of kings in England and America, Lyons traces democracy from its historical roots to the modern day, constructing a blueprint of what defines tyranny or democratic government in The DNA of Democracy. In this definitive guide, Richard C. Lyons documents the struggle for power between tyrants and heroes across time and place. Chronicling the acts of tyrants which are expressive of tyranny’s DNA, and the rebellions of heroes and the forms of law which are democracy’s DNA—Lyons outlines the roots of democracies, by telling the tales of tyrants who ironically gave them birth—births of rebellion! This book serves as a how to contemporary guide on identifying the menace of a tyrant when you see one!

The DNA of Democracy by Richard C. Lyons Review

Illinois poet/essayist/screenwriter Richard C. Lyons gained his education through Loyola Academy the University of North Texas, and Southern Methodist University Cox School of Business. He maintains his family profession of printing and continues to be involved in publishing and stage and television production. His books to date – BUT BY THE CHANCE OF WAR and THE DNA OF DEMOCRACY – and he has been awarded the 2019 Nautilus Book Award.Knowing the art of challenging a reader in a startling and thought provoking Foreword, Lyons states: ‘This author has found it imperative, as a citizen, having studied something of history and human character, to undertake a labor intended to bring clarity to the understanding of our present state of government, informed by the sobering knowledge that democracy itself need not end with enormous explosions; it may be smothered in gathering silences. Democracy need not be killed in overt acts of war; it may perish through what appear to be kindnesses. Democracy need not fall visibly, noisily and dramatically; it may crumble, by imperceptible degrees, before disappearing. Democracy need not be crushed by foreign foes; it may collapse under many slight assaults, given and received by its own citizens, whose acts serve an end of societal implosion.’The use of the concept of DNA (that fundamental molecule that carries genetic instructions in all living things) to explore the history of various forms of government is indicative of the powerful writing power Lyons owns. His essays (or assays) lead us through Greek and Biblical history, the Roman era, monarchy, and the inception of the ‘American way’ – the product of history and a government of democracy from inception through Civil War an beyond. ‘The history of democracy, from its birth to the present day, begins with early “labor pains” that intensify with opposition to tyranny. Indeed, many of democracy’s key advances have come in response to the experience of intolerable acts of tyranny.’In extraordinarily fine prose, accompanied by fine illustrations by Robert Venables, Lyons scopes the essence of democracy and the ‘masterpieces’ (e.g. the Ten Commandments, the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, the Emancipation Proclamation, etc) that form the backdrop for this intensive yet wholly entertaining treatise. Volume 2 of this series – SHADOWS OF THE ACROPOLIS – is promised and for all those standing in observation of our current tension, this series is a ‘must read.’ Very highly recommended. Grady Harp, August 20

The DNA of Democracy (Volume Book 1) by Richard Lyons is a masterful presentation that highlights the important milestones of governmental rule beginning with Egypt, the Israelite nation, the Greeks, the Romans, the British Isles and eventually culminates at the suffragette movement in the United States of America. It is definitely not a "dry" read in regards to the metamorphosis of democracy as currently experienced in America.Highlights of the book include wonderful and powerful quotes that are cited by the author which include poets such as Byron and Keats. Another quote from the book that may entice the individual to delve in to the illuminating pages of the DNA of Democracy states, "Tyranny is the dark of a vast swap; democracy is the flower of the lotus, which through struggle, sits in beauty, in the light atop."Also, the reader will most likely, compare the early days of democracy with what is being experienced today and the challenges facing a democratic government and its people. Of particular note was term limits related by the author under the leadership of Pericles (Athens). The rational for limitations on holding office was the denial of concentrated power by long-serving representatives. The DNA of Democracy (Volume Book 1) by Richard Lyons is an intriguing, interesting and inspirational read as it highlights the important thinkers of each of the civilizations and their contribution to the democratic process. The take away for the reader of this powerful book will probably be a fresh look at the metamorphosis of democracy through civilization. This is powerfully demonstrated through a fantastic portrayal of thoughts and ideas that will not only stimulate the mind, but motivate the spirit in regards to the pursuit of being thinking individuals and citizens. The reader, most likely, will be reminded of the precious gift of democracy and embrace and nurture this as a premier way of government rule.

Ever since societies started to organize themselves, conflicts in the manner of assuming, conferring or exercising of authority and rights and contingent duties for the accepted ideals have been considered in great detail by prominent thinkers.Concepts like democracy, liberty, equality, fraternity, state, nation, privileges and forms of governments ranging from absolute monarchy to militarism to democratic functioning in different mores have been analyzed, given shape and systematically followed by different peoples in different weathers and periods in different ways. The DNA of Democracy by Richard Lyons is a scholarly, but easily accessible read, that introduces the reader to a ‘compilation of historical vignettes, discerning the future of our democracy by rediscovering the combative, instructive, fascinating past of tyranny and democracy.’If there was ever a book that needed to be recommended as a full meal of enlightenment regarding the historicity of democracy and where it might make progress, this would be that book.Highly recommended reading and a well-deserved five stars from me.

And outstanding read from ancient times to the modern day. The history and sacrifices made by people In The name of democracy are many and profound. From all walks of life social status, race, nationality and creed. This book lays out the foundation and the jagged journey to freedom for all. I feel it’s a book everyone should read and look forward to his next volume.
