Before I start this review. I want to say that I needed 24 hours to get my thoughts on this book. How come this book isn't more popular. This book delivers a powerful message. And to be honest my son's who are white and only 25% Hispanic and are darker then me will be reading this book. Especially with what's going on in our American. And bad apple cops hurting people. I highly recommend this book for anyone. Richard did amazing job with the story and the characters. I had tears in my eyes at times because I felt these characters. And they felt like my own family. Pick up this short and amazing middle grade book.About BookMateo is thirteen year old boy who lost his sister Lily . Who was shot by a cop who thought Lily had a gun. Mateo and family are trying hard to deal with the death of !ily and who to blame. Highly recommend!!!!!
I love that Richard never waste pages setting up the story, getting to the point, and getting us to our final destination. I read this in one sitting and I wasn't disappointed.I enjoyed the family dynamic set up with already established tension between siblings that needed to be worked out. I love having drama within drama but most importantly I loved the message and that it didn't end up with a problem solved bow wrapped around it. Richard kept it real, as always, and didn't sugar coat anything.I loved this and think this book deserves more attention then it's gotten!!!
I would never have imagined that a topic as serious and prevalent as police brutality could be geared towards a younger audience. The book is not only successful at covering such a painful and sensitive issue to younger fans (without talking down to them); it also reaches a wider, adult audience. Any heartbreak that this book may put you through as it explains Mateo's confusion and hurt has purpose. Brave like Lily is not another book that pushes and pulls you through the protagonist's suffering for entertainment. It's obvious the book was written to be a source of comfort to those who have gone through this injustice and the rest of us who witness it.
What a hard hitting book. This show how hard kids have it. A must read by all.
This book is so good. Emotional and empowering. I love how it focused on finding the courage to speak up against injustice. It's a powerful book, and the world needs it.
