Thank you Mr. Jonasson for this book. I read the previous Hulda book and enjoyed it. We already know how she handles her approaching retirement at the age of 65 in the first book of this series, "The Darkness." I am only sorry that this series doesn't start with a much younger Hulda so that we might follow her though the years. I woiuld have liked to have met and become acquainted with her husband and daughter previously. Hulda really touched me with her sad life and losses.Regarding this current mystery, I really liked the characters and trying to figure out who the culprits were. I had no idea who they were and enjoyed being surprised when they were disclosed.I have read the Ari Thor series and really enjoyed them as well. Ari is a different personality than Hulda who seems to be of stronger fortitude than Ari.If this series continues I look forward to seeing Hulda promoted and Lydur has been terminated from his position and is out of Hulda's hair. It would be great if and when the hand off of the belt to the prisoner were somehow disclosed in a future book with possible criminal charges for Lydur, who is a despicable character. Hulda's hard work should be appreciated by her co-workers and superiors.Looking forward to a lengthy Hulda series.
This is not just a thriller. It is a novel taking us through the lives and worries of the main characters. The 4 young who try to forget their teens for various reasons, the policeman who lives with a lie forced upon him by a city slicker and most of all the one and only Hulda who has been marked forever by her past (the search for a father, the death of her daughter and that of her husband and worries about the oncoming retirement.The 'thriller' aspect is only secondary. A marvellous novel.
I believe I've read everything by Ragnar Jonasson and I am never disappointed. His books are a perfect mixture for me of intriguing plots, fascinating people and dynamics among the characters, and wonderful physical ambience. I must admit I'm a winter/cold weather person so his Icelandic locations are perfect for me, particularly in the summer. The books aren't overly cute cosy, but they also aren't so grim that you can't read them before going to sleep.
After the stunning first book, which really just floored me, this was a more workmanlike effort with no real surprises. Well written in the sparse fashion that seems de rigueur for nordic mystery writing these days but Hulda in particular does not come across as alive and interesting a character as in Book 1 and the solution to the mystery is pretty unsurprising. Solid work but not up to the standards of The Darkness, which set a very very high bar. Liked it enough though that Ill read The Mist when out in English.
The author tells one story by blending past and present. In places it is confusing and requires going back a few chapters. There are times in the story telling where the story stops. The author finished the story strong and wraps up the mystery with a twist tie. Looking forward to next RJ book.
