This book (signed and highly anticipated) has been sitting on my shelf for months while I waited for the e-book to come out so I could read it. I collect hardbacks but I read e-books. I loved Turn Down the Lights and A Long December is one of my favorite story collections. I was expecting excellence from this collection. While I loved some of these stories, some were just ok. My favorite stories were Roses and Raindrops and Stephen King at 70 Tribute. There was so much love and respect in that tribute. With King being my favorite author, it really touched me. I really liked The Sculptor, The Association and Odd Numbers also.What I didn't like was Widow's Point. I have 2 signed copies of the novella and I really wasn't impressed with it and didn't like the style. I was disappointed that it was included in the collection and took up so much room. I also didn't like Dirty Coppers and left it DNF. In the same vein, Murder House Script was another style I don't like. I would have been far happier without those three. That's just a personal opinion and I am sure many enjoyed them.I really loved the story notes at the end. They made the stories personal and the insight was entertaining. So I while can't recommend all the stories, there were enough excellent ones to make it worth it.
Comprising 17 short stories and 2 novellas which range from suspense to horror, this is a difficult read to put down.Naturally, one will find some more to their liking than others. But, I did not find one I didn’t like. Each is written with thought and imagination.There were a couple sticking points. “Widow’s Pointâ€, a novella, shows up in another book, as does a young couple in a short story dealing with the local homeowners’ association. Its to be expected when reading some books of short stories. In Kindle form, there is one which is unreadable. “Murder House Manuscript.†Try enlarging the font size to no effect. The text remained so small I just skipped it.The “star†of the book, I found, is the title’s namesake. It’s the last story. Being more than a suspense story, there’s a subliminal message of life and family for the reader.One thing I’ve found since reading Richard Chizmar is I can’t get enough of his books. As an author, he’s up at the top.
I first got introduced to Richard Chizmar by way of “Gwendy’s Button Box†because I am a huge Stephen King fan. I decided I liked the book so much to give Richard a chance as a stand alone author. I needed a book for my library club that involved short stories. This was the perfect fit. The way his stories build you up and then just when you think you are going to find out the answer the story stops!!! This gives the reading the ability to fill in the blanks. Absolutely outstanding work and shout out to Cemetery Dance (his magazine/publication business) I am now a subscriber there as well. Look forward to reading more work by you.
Was a short trip. At least it felt that way. It was over much too soon. I gave it 5 stars for the title story. If the rest of the stories were crap(which they were not. Far from it), I still would have given it the same rating for that one alone.
Some stories were good some were interesting and some cell flat for me. Murder House was unreadable , in Kindle format, as print too small and too much of a bother to enlarge the print, back out next page repeat. You lost the smooth continuity as reader strives for. I absolutely adored the story about the dad and Ellerly Queen.
