What It Takes: How I Built a $100 Million Business Against the Odds by Raegan Moya-Jones Review

This book was such a let down. It was 1/3 soap-boxy, 1/3 self-congratulatory and the 1/3 a big middle finger to the people that did her wrong. This should've been a blog post, not a book. I thought she was going to describe the story of A+A and how she built it with all the trials and tribulations about growing a business, but this book wasn't like that at all. She flits around the story with no real organization and loads of repetition of the same uninteresting things she's already said (who was her editor???). She starts the story then launches into a copy/paste of stats on women in business related to that part of the story (ie % of women who launch businesses – totally irrelevant). Blech. Then she goes again into her story, tells a part of it and then launches into more soap-boxy, copy/paste crap (X% of women don't speak up or raise their hands in school). Eyeroll. The only good part of the book was the actual brand story which was when she saved her own company from a ruinous partner (about 3 pages of the whole book) and then when she sells it to the wrong type of people to disastrous results (maybe 10 more pages). She says that she grew it to a $100 million dollar company but doesn’t say much more than that, which makes you think that she didn’t do much more than what she actually described in the book. She also doesn’t get into any real interesting details personally besides being overwhelmed and relying on her spouse. She glosses over everything which makes you think this book was meant to suit her own personal agenda – putting in writing how much she hates her private equity partners, boosting her own self esteem and a public shout-out to some of her loyal friends and employees. Again, this should have been a blog post. There really is nothing in here about What It Takes or How She Built It. Sorry - was hoping for much more.

I was so inspired by this book (except for one part which i will get to in a minute). I own two business, and when I started my first - a soap + bath product business - I set low goals because I didn't think someone like me could just start and build a $1MM+ business. I have had to spend a lot of time studying business owners ahead of me to change those beliefs. The story of how Raegan build a $100MM business is jaw dropping, simply because she just did it, and didn't have any advantages that I don't have.The tough part of this story came when the company was acquired. My love for corporate life, and the spark that got me out of there and into entrepreneurship, came after the last company I was at for 10 years was bought and everything went down hill. While I am happy for Raegan that she got her cash out, and would love a similar result in my business, it's another story about how that move comes with a hefty price.Thanks so much Raegan for sharing your story, and for the sobering statistics on women owned businesses. I also coach soapmaker business owners, and will share what I learned with them as inspiration & why things need to change.

I loved Raegan's honesty and candor in describing how she built a major brand with determination and resilience. Raegan does not pull any punches. She tells it straight and it is refreshing to hear the victories as well as the trials and tribulations of starting, running and selling a business. Many others face similar dilemmas such as issues with partners, building a team, getting capital, dealing with investors and balancing one's life. This book is an easy read - entertaining, fast paced and authentic. Entrepreneurs are a special breed and anyone looking to build a business should approach the opportunity with help and advice from others. The more you surround yourself with smart people, the more successful you can be. Raegan's story attests to the value of hard work, grit, networking and getting close to your customer and what they want. Can't wait to read about her continued adventures.

I normally hate, detest, loathe!, abhor reading “get rich” books and “self help” books cause they all make seem so easy but this book is so down to earth and rea, I could see myself in half the pages. And as I read this book every idea, every invention I’ve ever had and discarded because I thought it was impossible has now returned full force. I love how she’s so “normal” & “ordinary”. Gives me hope for my future. Please read it! if for no other reason but to see the possibilities. You’ll chuckle, hmmm, ahhhhh, shake your head and even lol while reading this. Two thumbs and two toes up👍🏾👍🏾👍🏾

Hi, I am 9 years old and I read this book and I love it and I would read this over and over again. What I like about this book is it tells you how Aden + Anais was built and if I decide to start a business I would read this book again. This is not only a business book, but a AWESOME read.
