8 Souls by Rachel Rust Review
This book was better than I expected it to be. Aside from the fact that the author has to play fast and loose with some of the facts (the Moore house is actually a popular tourist attraction, not a vacant derelict; and Tommy Ford is completely fictional, although the conflict between the hardware store owners isn't), the story itself is an intriguing take on the history of the axe murders. The characters are vivid, and the resolution is enjoyable.My main disappointment is that David was less careful than he ought to have been, considering the things that had happened in the past. The culprit's identity was not believable.
I COULD NOT put this book down. Although the central characters are teenagers it may be better for older teens and adults given that the graphic murder of two adults and six children in their sleep is the central focus. It’s a well written, fast-paced tale, more mystery than horror, although it is plenty scary. A real mail-biter, well written and edited and the teens rang true. This writer seems to remember what it was like to be a teenaged girl.
The author is immensely talented and writes one heck of a compelling book. I would’ve given it 5 stars if it weren’t for the foul language scattered liberally throughout the book. Had I realized how much there would be and how the frequency of cuss words would’ve increase, I would’ve stopped reading early on. I certainly cannot recommend this book as a YA book for that reason. No one, for that matter, needs to experience it and I will not be reading (regretfully) any of the author’s books for that reason.Such a shame for such a talented person to have to tarnish their work with that crap. :(
This book got your attention in the first chapter and held on throughout the book! If you like mystical reading and surprised endings and don't mind cussing you'll love this book!
The intriguing plot was unique and the story kept twisting and turning. I loved the characters. Definitely a page turner.
