I love Harriet. This book includes great strategies for kids and parents alike who deal with anxiety. Dr. Melmed does it again!

It is rare when a children’s book entertains with humor, loveable characters, and simultaneously offers practical tools for kids to navigate through “bigger than life” emotions. Harriet’s Monster Diary, Awfully Anxious has it all! The dialogue is cleverly written including Harriet’s “Aha, stomach hurting, and knee shaking moments” while preparing for a class presentation on Manglemane lions. Though Harriet appears to have it all together (family, friends, and dreams of becoming a doctor of Monsterology), she was nervous, scared, and ready to throw up at the thought of standing up in front of her class. Through a series of fortunate and not so fortunate events, Harriet learned the secret of ST4 mindfulness and deep breathing. These techniques are broken down into four simple steps children can follow to calm themselves down during stressful times ~ at home or at school. Harriet’s Monster Diary, Awfully Anxious is brave enough to tackle children’s mental health challenges by teaching universal principles of mindfulness that humanize rather than stigmatize our struggles.

This is a wonderful, easy to read story, in the graghic novel style so popular with kids these days. It models how a child can take charge of dealing with his/her stresses and challenges utilizing a number of helpful techniques and mindfulness. The story is fun and engaging despite being about the serious subject "Anxiety" in children. Children will see that they are not alone in their worries and what to do about them. The parents section gives sound advice and steps parents can take to help their children with anxiety face their worries and fears ultimately building self -mastery and confidence through the process.Dr. K.
