Though fascinated with the land of their tradition’s birth, virtually no Japanese Buddhists visited the Indian subcontinent before the nineteenth century. In the richly illustrated Seeking ŚÄkyamuni, Richard M. Jaffe reveals the experiences of the first Japanese Buddhists who traveled to South Asia in search of Buddhist knowledge beginning in 1873. Analyzing the impact of these voyages on Japanese conceptions of Buddhism, he argues that South Asia developed into a pivotal nexus for the development of twentieth-century Japanese Buddhism. Jaffe shows that Japan’s growing economic ties to the subcontinent following World War I fostered even more Japanese pilgrimage and study at Buddhism’s foundational sites. Tracking the Japanese travelers who returned home, as well as South Asians who visited Japan, Jaffe describes how the resulting flows of knowledge, personal connections, linguistic expertise, and material artifacts of South and Southeast Asian Buddhism instantiated the growing popular consciousness of Buddhism as a pan-Asian tradition—in the heart of Japan.

A good bit of the tale of Japanese Buddhism's coping with modernity's challenge is framed as some kind of reaction to the West, be it opposition, appropriation, adaptation, or whatnot. This excellent study doesn't necessarily aim to overturn the importance of this facet of the issue per se, but by the end you'll have no doubt that it is indeed a facet rather than the whole story. "Seeking Sakyamuni" overwhelmingly and properly complicates the standard narrative by convincingly demonstrating the key significance of South and Southeast Asia in Japanese Buddhism's self-articulation as a modern world religion with a bright future.This overarching point is supported by extensive original research highlighting the many concrete interactions and travels of particular people in dense yet (hence?) readably interesting detail realistically though not reductively grounded in the economic and political realities of the time in question. Of particular note (to me, anyway), architectural and artistic innovations usually ignored or brushed past as oddities receive the attentive focus they warrant in these pages, and the accompanying illustrations (many taken by the author himself on site) add much to the discussion while being visually fascinating in their own right.Obviously this book is certain to be an indispensable source in the study of modern Japanese Buddhism in general, but it's also noteworthy as a crucially formative work showcasing how an effective transnational and transcultural approach can shed vibrant new light on topics prematurely considered settled.
