The One Dollar Rip-Off (Hardman) by Ralph Dennis Review
Once again Dennis brings an older Atlanta back to life. He deals in specific people and places so well I can taste the drinks and the food and see the view out of the Polaris room before it was dwarfed by the extension of Peachtree Center.
An under-rated series, interesting as much for its sociology and the features that mark it as of its times as it is for its excellent narrative drive.
Love this 70’s book and the fact that it’s in Atlanta. Being familiar with the locations and the author’s Leonard like style makes it a very fun read.
This book wasn't as good as the last one but it was all right I am still a fan of Hard man and will read the next one
4 stars for another hard boiled detective story in the Hardman series. This is book 9 in the series, but it can be read as a stand alone. This book starts off with a football pool bet at a bar that goes wrong. The football match is between the Buffalo Bills and the NY Jets, with references to OJ(Simpson) and Joe Willie(Namath). Hump Evans and Jim Hardman are at George's, for beer and corned beef sandwiches. They are regulars and have gotten to know Sam Najjar, the bartender. A bartender from Moe's and Joe's, a bar a few doors down, hands Sam a sheet of paper. It is a hundred dollar pool on the football evening game. There are 2 spaces left, at $1 each. Sam takes 1 and Hump takes the last one. Hump's number is a 3 for both columns. That means in order for Hump to win the final score has to end in 3 for both teams: 33 to 13, 13 to 3, etc. This is an unlikely score, but Hump does win. When he goes to collect, someone has already claimed the money. Hump demands to see the pool sheet. A Johnny B has erased Hump's name and written his own name in that space.Even though it is only $1(and the reason for the title), Hump is angry, because he has been made a fool. They track down the offender, a Joe Bottoms who erased Hump's name and then sold the spot to someone else. Bottoms doesn't have $100, but promises to get it in 24 hours. He gives Hump a $2,000 check in his name as collateral. The next day Hump is arrested on suspicion of killing Bottoms. The check is the tip of an iceberg involving a massive scam of $500,000. This is a lot of money in 1977 Atlanta,Georgia. Unrevealing this sophisticated scam makes for an entertaining mystery/thriller.One quote, describing a small Georgia town: "It was a town of churches. It was low and flat land and driving in, approaching Tiflon, I counted 13 spires and bell towers. There had to be a lot of sin in a town that small to need that many preachers."Recommended to Raymond Chandler fans. This was a kindle unlimited book.
