The Braveheart Exit: 7 Steps to Your Family Business Legacy by Randy Long Review

Kudos to author Randy Long for writing about a subject near and dear to any business owner. The Braveheart Exit isn't another run of the mill management book or exercise in self aggrandizement. No, this book is all about the things we as business owners should be doing to preserve wealth and legacy. I truly wish I had a copy of this many years ago as I realize how sound the advice is and what a difference it would have made. Luckily, as the Mr. long points out, it is never too late to start. Without giving too much away, the reader learns that Randy learned a lot from his brother David who excels in business strategies. I get the sense that through his book, Randy is " paying it forward " in some regard. I'll begin my own " pay it forward " exercise by recommending this well written and even entertaining book to a few colleagues of mine immediately.

For me one of the most refreshing aspects of this title is that it (the Kindle edition) has the look of a real book. I love Amazon and I love e books, but every once in a while I like to read something that has professional typesetting, graphics and editing – like a real book. This one has all three. Like most Amazon e books, outstanding information is provided, but BraveHeart is also easy on the eyes and gives the OCD part of my mind which silently begins fuming at the sight of misspelled words or punctuation errors typically found in books at this price point, mine included, a day off.For those who are wondering what this book is really about, it is geared towards small business owners who need a solid plan for taking their dream to the next level of success. Named after the infamous William Wallace (the author is of Scottish – Irish descent), the author's trademarked “BraveHeart Planning” is the real meat and potatoes of this book.“BraveHeart Planning takes a leader who is willing to make the hard choices.” This quote is from the section titled “Everything Rises and Falls on Leadership”, and further emphasizes both the title's namesake, and the author's belief that business success or failure is largely dependent on the attitude of the people most responsible for the operation of their business – the owners. The book challenges all who are business owners, or potentials, to be ready to face adversity - and to effectively lead while doing so. The final sentence of the section reads, “You will need to be the kind of person that leads in such as way that he lives and leaves a legacy. It takes a lion. Stand up and roar!”The next chapters take us through reviews and anecdotes of successful individuals, and the journey they took to finally reach their pinnacle. Similar to a modern day “Think and Grow Rich”, the author delves into the factors that surrounded the situations these entrepreneurs (or entrepreneurial spirits) weathered on their path to success. Whether describing the July heat of 1776 Philadelphia, the volatile Falkland Islands in 1982, Jerusalem in 848 BC or modern times, the author provides examples which provoke thought and promote learning through the experiences of others.Chapters are punctuated with relevant quotes, and are written with an energetic and positive style which makes this book both entertaining and valuable.Overall I think this is a great book. I purchased it for $0.99 and think at that price you would be hard pressed to find another book of this caliber. If you own a small business, or are thinking of owning one, I can highly recommend this book.

This is a book that I will be recommending to all my colleagues and friends who own a small or medium sized business. Randy Long lays out a clear step-by-step plan that teaches business owners how to get the most value out of their business when they plan to exit from it. Additionally, he has shown me how to (and why I should) start planning for that transition now, even though I have no immediate plans to sell my business. I am confident that by following the "Braveheart Planning Process" my family will be much happier, informed, wealthy because of this book. Thank you Randy for writing this!

“The question isn’t, ‘Will you exit your business?’ The question is, ‘When you do it, will you do it well?’ The sooner you can accept the inevitable, the more successful the outcome can be.”THE BRAVEHEART EXIT represents the distilled wisdom of a specialist in the area of business exit strategies, with decades of experience. Apart from the expert and conscientious treatment of the subject matter, what I particularly appreciated about the book is that it is:* enlivened with colorful historical anecdotes* enriched with real-life stories* holistic in its approach* honest, in terms of self disclosures made by the author* modest in its tone and presentationFor any owner of a thriving business, at just 99 cents, this ebook has to be one of the best deals on the planet. It’s also an excellent example, for other authors, as to how a book on a subject that could be deadly boring can be lively and interesting—with no sacrifice to accuracy and quality.

When I first read The BraveHeart Exit, I really thought I would find another book that was about 10% actual knowledge and 90% trying to sell you on the idea so that you would become a customer of their company, but that is definitely not what I found. Randy Long is straightforward and honest in his teaching that many of us are not ready to exit our businesses and then gives real, how-to steps to start working towards that time when we can transition out seamlessly. This book showed me just how little I actually knew about exit planning and how important a good exit plan is when the transition out of a business is usually the largest financial transaction of your life. I would definitely recommend to anyone that has started thinking about getting out of their business or want to learn how to continue to build your business and bringing your family closer together all in one.
