I have two grandsons, ages 2 and 4, who love to sing “Tractor, Tractor†and “Bears.†I bought this book to read to them the next time they visit. I am more than delighted at the way the story teaches a great lesson without shaming or manipulating children. I’m lookig forward to more books to come. Great job, Randy!The illustrations are awesome too!
I bought this for a homeschool child. The poem is so fun and the rhythm reading it together makes fot a good cuddle time. The characters so friendly.
Learning how to play with others, or even by oneself, begins at a young age, like Doug the Slug discovers in WHO WILL PLAY with ME?, a new picture book by author Randall Goodgame. At first take, it’s a likable-looking, elementary-grade feeling type of book. In its 57 pages (half of which are short, rhyming sentences), the reader sees that although Doug’s dilemma of sluggishness prevents him from dancing, it cannot hold him back from getting into a newly discovered wagon. It’s then that he discovers his need for someone to pull him; so, he offers to pull someone else first, to which his friend, Sparky, the bee, responds. But, does this work out satisfactorily? The book answers that question and the reader will understand it. And, as a finality, on one last page, is added a scripture verse upon which the story is based. The illustrations, simple drawings with blank white backgrounds, realistically depict the actions and the characters’ emotions. Randall Goodgame’s popularity grew following his award-winning Slugs and Bugs Christian family musical albums, from which in 2019 he created two new picture books, Are We Still Friends? and Who Will Play With Me? In today’s incredibly competitive children’s picture book market, God continues to bless writers, such as Mr. Goodgame, and illustrators such as Cory Jones, who honor His name in songs, stories, and pictures.
“Who Will Play With Me?†by Slugs & Bugs creator Randall Goodgame is a wonderfully cute story for children about friendship, forgiveness, and helping out.I have a seven year old daughter and I had her read the book to me. She was able to easily read “normal†words and had a blast figuring out the “weird†words (like “slurshy soggyâ€)! When she was finished we talked about what she learned.She very easily told me that the story was about how to be a good friend, that we needed to help our friends out, that we all have different gifts/abilities, and that we should be nice and forgiving. All that without my prompting! That’s a win!While reading, she was definitely enjoying the book as she often smiled and laughed. It was a very enjoyable time reading the book with her and I felt as if she organically learned some valuable lessons.I recommend this book for as young as five years old, if you are reading it to your child. In size, illustration and presentation, Who Will Play with Me? reminds me of the many Dr. Suess books my children loved as preschoolers. It's just the right length for a read aloud book for this age group, and the winsome characters (Slug and Bug) will inspire interest and amusement.Not overtly Christian, the story encourages children to be kind and put others first. It also points how our diversity as individuals helps us to accomplish more together. All of our traits are worthy and useful in different situations. The book ends with a quote from Philippians 2:3:"In humility, value others above yourselves."The author, Randall Goodgame is the well-known creator of Slugs and Bugs music and you can visit SlugsandBugs.com to find more of his products.VERDICT: Overall, this looks like a fun, cute book for young children. My only criticism is the rhyming dialog seemed a bit forced, and lacked bounce. I give it a 4.
