Easy to read with nice pictures and information

As an experienced and knowledgable birder, I recommend not purchasing this book if you wish to understand the species and how to identify and where to find them. I went to the book release in Bar Harbor, Maine where a presentation was put together. Numerous mis-ID's were made in the presentation and reflected equally, if not more so, within the guide. Unfortunately, the guide is highly inaccurate and misrepresents where some birds can be found. Some 'hotspots' are places where a bird has been seen, but has the slightest likelihood of being seen there again. Misidentifications are glaringly obvious and quite regular within the guide. I recommend a recall on the book (if that's possible) as it is entirely unhelpful for anyone actually trying to learn about and see birds. I wonder if a knowledgable editor actually looked inside it once it was finished.

As an amateur nature photographer and a newcomer to birding, I find Birding New England to be an invaluable reference tool. Some species are obvious, while others can be challenging because of subtle coloring or pattern differences. The Minetors make that process easier by providing great photos and descriptions of an array of species, along with helpful Appendices by state and location, so I can approach my search based on the clues I can glean in a short amount of time or from a distance.

The husband-wife team of Randi and Nic Minetor have produced another winning guidebook. Nic Minetor's photographs are great and often show key identification marks, which is helpful for an inexperienced birder. I really liked the format of the pages starting with Randi's helpful one-liners right beneath the species names. The maps are good as well. Probably the most helpful bits of information come in the "Hot Spots" entry because it can guide the birder to a place where you can reliably see a species. Well done!

Almost perfect for travelers either new to birding or new to finding birds in New England. Although it does not replace the usual field guides (most photos are male birds in breeding plumage), this book provides essential information in an easy-to-find format that alleviates the frustration of having to read through too much while the bird disappears. Introductory material and appendices provide tips and background information to help with trip planning, bird identification, and more. Here's hoping the Minetors produce similar books for other parts of the U.S.
