Death of a Dormouse by Reginald Hill Review

"Death of a Dormouse" is one of the Reginald Hill early mysteries now being reprinted in the "Felony and Mayhem Mysteries." This book is intricately and convincingly plotted and definitely falls into the "page-turner" category. It's hard to put down. Unlike Hill's later books that feature a detective team, "Death of a Dormouse" is the story of a timid and passive woman seriously wronged by her dead husband who has to peel back her twenty year marital relationship in order to reinvent herself and get on with life. The peeling back proves to be extremely dangerous and one unlikely discovery after another about her husband's business and extra-marital activities threaten to violently end her life. The evolution of the heroine into a resourceful and cunning player is as interesting as the extraordinary plot line. This is an excellent read, particularly if you have NOT already read "The Spy's Wife," to which "Death of a Dormouse" owes some of its theme.

A very good psychological suspense wherein a woman goes from "dormouse" that is totally subdued to a fighter: for her rights and for a life as she wants to live it. Reginald Hill is one of the best English mystery writers and he shows his stuff here. This work reminds me of Rendell in one of her good psychological mysteries and he is as competant as she is in showing "what makes people tick".

I think that Hill's Dalziel/Pascoe series is the best police procedural series I've read. The writing is literate and erudite, the characters are fully-fleshed (and actually develop and change over the years) and the plots are page-turners. There is some variation, as I like some more than others, but none are failures.Dormouse is a stand-alone novel, and I just don't think it works, perhaps because I don't find the protagonist believeable, and since the book is basically about her development after the loss of her husband, if she doesn't work as a character, than the book doesn't work. Also, the book feels far more thrown together than some of Hill's other works; perhaps he just hadn't quite hit his stride.I debated giving this only 2 stars, but it's not "bad", it's just so unimpressive coming from Hill. But he died recently, and I'll err on the side of generosity for this one.

This book read like a rahashed screen play 20 years old. Not nearly as good as his more modern novels.

I only read the first chapter because I knew I wasn't going to like this book. There were two things about this novel that I found unappealing. First: there was too much foul language too soon.Nor did I find it believable. I can't imagine two matrons talking to each other like that. It doesn't ring true.Second: the main character's history/personality was unattractive. Agoraphobia? And she overcomes it? Yawn.Still looking for the next Dorothy Sayers or Michael Innes.
