Stories for South Asian Supergirls by Raj Kaur Khaira Review
I loved this book. I learned about many people that are similar like me, a supergirl and south asian. The illustrations were beautiful and the credits to the artists were very thoughtful. I loved how detailed the book was with timelines, life history, illustrates, etc. But my only wish was that there were more stories about Bengali girls. I love all my South Asian girls, but I wish there was more than one Bengali person since Bengali girls don't really know any powerful historical figures. I know that one person is a lot, but compared to how there was five for other nations, I wished there was more. I know that my dislike is a bit narcissistic, but honestly its because it makes me sad that i don't know many Bengali female figures and I want to know more about my ethnicity.
I take my role as my niece's aunt seriously especially after she disclosed feeling uncomfortable being a South Indian girl with deeper skin. So I thought this book would be a great way to show her that there are awesome Indian women that look like her that are doing incredible things to give her a boost in her confidence. I was so excited to hear from her mom that my niece couldn't put this book down! They'd read a few pages and then my niece would beg to keep reading! Thank you so much for this book, it really matters to see women that look like us represented especially for little girls who struggle feeling accepted when her nobody else in her classroom looks like her!
The book includes truly inspirational stories. Some of these stories are of women from both sides of the world. Those with money & power and the ones who suffered fighting their battles. The illustrations portray the story very well and you can get to know about the artist who produced these stunning images. Above all the book also supports women's charities and such.
I love this book. I’m an adult and bought it because I was so excited about it, and it brings me joy to know that there is a book out there like this. I want to buy it for all the little desi kiddos in my life!!!
I don't come across books like this very often. Looking forward to sharing it with my daughter as she grows to learn her own power.
