Pants Off/Dance Off: A Gentleman's Guide by Rachel Zake Review
This is a very funny account of a lot of dates which I'm glad happened to the author and not me. The style is light and easy to read and the analysis is down to earth. It's a lot of common sense of how to be a gentleman in this modern world.I recommend the read, it's really easy to get into and the author does a good job helping out the perpetuators of bad dates with what seems like common sense feedback but you can totally see how some of the guys thought they were doing it right only to be way off the mark.This one's a good book for both men and women and super interesting to someone like me not immersed in the dating world. I finished it on a couple of long flights so it's not intimidating.
Read this book from start to finish in one sitting during an airport delay and it was the most enjoyable travel delay I’ve ever had. This book is so clever and funny. I really liked the way the author broke down the good and the bad at the end of each date story - giving credit where it was due (if even possible in some cases)! Such a quick, entertaining read no matter what stage of life you’re in. I’m rooting for this author and don’t want her to have any more unsuccessful dates, yet I found myself wanting to hear more stories like this from her.
This book is a charming compendium of the author’s dating experiences with a motley crew of neurotic, narcissistic, often oblivious men who represent some of the worst swimmers in the dating pool. Zake presents these tales of rude, inappropriate dating and relationship behavior as an entirely engaging, funny and enjoyable guidebook for men to learn by bad example. She clearly has a sense of humor – and sometimes absolute horror – about her journey that is infectious in a non-STI way.She categorizes each of 22 diverse dating expeditions as a cautionary tale, for example, “A Cautionary Tale: The Naked Guy,†“The Unwanted Kiss,†or “The Bad Grammar Guy,†reveals the gruesome details of the experience with each guy, and then highlights the Good, the Bad and how each could have fared better at the Pants Off/Dance Off party. Zake closes the book with additional specific advice for men and women on how to survive and achieve success and possibly a long-term relationship or – if the fates allow – a soulmate while on a date in the human companionship competition.If you’re an adult male still making occasional or frequent forays into the coupling and courting scene, this book should be required reading. (I wish I could have read it in college.) But even if your dating days are long behind you, it’s a blast just to revive all of those daunting memories of the sometimes exhilarating, sometimes awkward dance ritual that is dating. Zake captures it accurately, with plenty of spice and just enough grains of salt to make it a highly palatable read.
I received a review copy of this, and it really pulled me back into my dating days. It's the type of quick read you can devour in one sitting--or enjoy one "cautionary tale" at a time. It's a great conversation starter--unlike Zake's "The Cranky Guy"--and men and women alike can learn a lot about what to do (and what not to do), based on Zake's experiences. Even if you're not wading around the dating pool, you're going to be entertained (as well as relieved Zake took one for the team and YOU only have to meet these people on paper)!
Okay guys, let's be honest, we can all do better, no one is perfect. In Pants Off/Dance Off, the author tells us why the men she dated did not get to participate in the Pants Off/Dance Off and why. Spoiler alert: Usually, the why is hilarious. But that is not the only thing the author tells us about her past dates, she also does a good job of letting the reader also gives us the pros (if any) and cons of what the failed dance partner did during the dates and what they could have done better. The final few chapters include listicles, about what you should include in your dating profile, to the type of women you should avoid when dating, I find a female perspective on these very helpful. The book is a short, funny read that could be finished in one sitting if you choose.
