Blood and Guts: A History of Surgery by Richard Hollingham

Read Online and Download Blood and Guts: A History of Surgery by Richard Hollingham. In Blood and Guts, veteran science writer Richard Hollingham weaves a compelling narrative from the key moments in surgical history. We have a ringside seat in the operating theater of University College Hospital in London as world-renowned Victorian surgeon Robert Liston performs a remarkable amputation in thirty seconds―from first cut to final stitch. Innovations such as Joseph Lister's antiseptic technique, the first open-heart surgery, and Walter Freeman's lobotomy operations, among other breakthroughs, are brought to life in these pages in vivid detail. Today, astonishing surgical breakthroughs are making limb transplants, face transplants, and a host of other previously un dreamed of operations possible. But getting here has not been a simple story of medical progress. This is popular science writing at it's best. "…a quick, entertaining read filled with operating-room dramas that end in disaster or triumph and a wide variety of heroes and villains." -Kirkus Reviews

Blood and Guts: A History of Surgery by Richard Hollingham Review

I purchased this book for my wife and me (we are both medical students who are planning on entering surgical residency next year), and we both enjoyed it immensely! Very well-written, and a pleasure to read.Speaking as a "lay-person" who would never want to be referred to as such - please do not be deterred by reviews that describe this as a superficial/lay-person's text - it is not a comprehensive account of the minutia of surgical history, nor is it a surgical reference book, and I am confident that Richard Hollingham never intended it to be either. It is, however, a well-composed, engaging narrative of several key moments in the history of surgical practice. This book was recommended to me by one of the core surgical faculty at my home institution - he wanted to spark my curiosity, and he succeeded. I will certainly continue to read other surgical history books - dryer, deeper, longer books - but I will never discount the value of this book. This is the book that made me excited to learn about the history of surgery, and I am grateful to the surgeon who recommended it to me!

If you have an interest in medical history, I highly recommend this book. As a lay-person who’s had numerous surgeries, I found this book very interesting. The book is brilliantly written in 324 pages, split up into categories of surgery per chapter. The information is basic, but informative, and entertaining.I also recommend this book if you’re into “ick” and gruesome details. I really enjoyed that part, mostly because it makes the history come alive. It gives you mental imagery that goes along with exactly how horrifying, gruesome, and gritty surgical medicine used to be.

As someone who teaches students who are going in to nursing and pre-med I'm always looking for good medical history books with stories to share. This definitely fit the bill. I knew some of the information, but not as much as as this book supplied. I still find it miraculous, these men during the 1800's and the thinking they did, and the research they did to finally move surgery forward into being more than an act of butchery. I also am very glad that I did not live back them. This is a great book for those who want to learn more history in this area. It isn't a textbook, and it doesn't write like a textbook. For something like medical history you don't want the dry writing seen with textbooks. This is a history, and it tries and succeeds in making medical history alive, which is what you want.

This was a wonderful book that explores fascinating medical procedures and cases and how the practice evolved over the centuries. It not only delves into the pre-Lister days of amputations without anesthetics or antiseptics and crazy pre-Victorian cosmetic surgery, but brings it all the way to present day heart / organ transplants and brain surgery which were once thought impossible. You really learn a lot of how much of what we know today was because of trial and error of surgeons (and want to be surgeons). I highly recommend this as a great addition to the amazing "The Butchering Art" by Lindsey Fitzharris. There's some overlap, but what overlaps really compliments the other. Next on my list is "The Knife Man" by Wendy Moore as I think it adds another important piece to these histories.

The exploration of medicine/surgery is jaw dropping as you read this book. The details make you feel you're watching history come alive and very grateful to live in this era! Great read to discover how and why medicine is a continuous practice that advances with good purpose.
