Eiffel's Tower for Young People (For Young People Series) by Rebecca Stefoff,Jill Jonnes

Read Online and Download Eiffel's Tower for Young People (For Young People Series) by Rebecca Stefoff,Jill Jonnes. Eiffel's Tower for Young People is a vivid, lively pageant of people and cultures meeting—and competing—on the world stage at the dawn of the modern era.The 1889 World's Fair was a worldwide event showcasing the cutting-edge cultural and technological accomplishments of the world's most powerful nations on the verge of a new century. France, with its long history of sophistication and cultivation and a new republican government, presented the Eiffel Tower, the world's tallest structure, crafted from eighteen thousand pieces of wrought iron and 2.5 million rivets, as a symbol of national pride and engineering superiority. The United States, with its brash, can-do spirit, full of pride in its frontier and its ingenuity, presented the rollicking Wild West show of Buffalo Bill Cody and Annie Oakley, and the marvelous new phonograph of Thomas Edison. With historical photos throughout, outsized personalities, squabbling artists, and a sprinkling of royalty, this dramatic history opens a window to a piece of the past that, in its passions and politics, is an unforgettable portrait of a unique moment in history.

Eiffel's Tower for Young People (For Young People Series) by Rebecca Stefoff,Jill Jonnes Review

This was a rather fascinating book. It tells the story of the 1889 World's Fair that is being planned in Paris. The city asked for bids for a structure to be built, and Gustave Eiffel's design was chosen. Many hated it, however, and Gustave and his team had many challenges trying to get the tower built and the elevators operational in time for the fair. Also chronicled in this book are the other popular events of the 1889 World's Fair such as Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, Annie Oakley's sharpshooting, Thomas Edison's phonograph, and all of the artists vying for attention and awards, including details on Vincent Van Gogh. The book is mostly chronological, following the six months of the fair, though it also has a chapter at the end that follows the activities of main stars of the book until the end of their life. Most interesting to me was that many in Paris wanted to take down the Eiffel Tower some ten years after the fair. Thankfully the committee was divided and Gustave worked hard to ensure that his tower was useful in studying weather and in providing communication to the military, which it did shortly thereafter in World War I.This is not a fast read, but it was very interesting. If you like Paris, the Eiffel Tower, and history, you owe it to yourself to read this book. I believe there is a version for adults as well, though the young people's version was quite meaty. I'd recommend it for readers 12 and up.

I ordered Eiffel's Tower in part for my niece and partly for myself. The current Jeopardy champion James H. mentioned that he prepared for the championship by reading Young People's versions of nonfiction books because they convey the information in an engrossing manner. Eiffel's Tower is an example of effective writing for young people.Eiffel's Tower tells the story of the World's Fair in Paris, France in 1889, the anniversary of the French Revolution. The French government holds a contest for a monument that will reflect France's progress and enlightenment. Most European countries are still monarchies and most refuse to participate in the World's Fair. The USA and France do compete and France is eager to prove its scientific prowess.Eiffel's design is controversial and Eiffel's Tower goes into the difficulties that he faced with the engineering, the financing, and its execution. He dealt with labor strikes, with difficult weather, with vast engineering problems in the construction and even with the elevators. Jill Jonnes covers these issues clearly and without dumbing them down. Instead, she conveys information on competition, trademark, labor laws, partnership and distributorship agreements in a way that makes sense for ordinary people and for young people eager to learn.Jill Jonnes tells the story of the World's Fair through Eiffel, through Thomas Edison and his amazing technological inventions (and his disputes with his business partners) and his emphasis on self-promotion, through Annie Oakley and Buffalo Bill who further enhance their reputations with the demonstrations of their shooting prowess. But Jill Jonnes does not gloss over the plight of the Native Americans that accompanied Buffalo Bill during his shows or of the workers that continued under difficult conditions to complete the Eiffel Tower in time for the opening of the World's Fair. This is a book that shares stories and conveys information and makes another place and time come vividly alive.

I'm delighted at this new focus on middle grade nonfiction! I was always a nonfiction reader, because it's true what they say -- truth is stranger (and more interesting) than fiction. Too often, young people read only fiction in school, so they gain no appreciation for narrative nonfiction. And they struggle when faced with nonfiction questions on the SAT!The book, although arranged around the building of the Eiffel Tower, really is a collection of stories surrounding its genesis and unveiling at the 1889 World's Fair in Paris. The narrative follows a cast of characters preparing to exhibit at the fair itself or in the area surrounding it. Famous names from American history people the cast -- Annie Oakley, Wild Bill Cody, Thomas Edison and more. Of course, Gustave Eiffel and his tribulations surrounding completion of the tower are fully sketched out.Presenting nonfiction topics through the lens of people rather than events or objects is a great way to capture the reader's interest. Even I found the people more compelling than the account of the tower and its building. I skipped through some of the more detailed information about the construction of the tower and its elevators. I loved the description of the tower itself, though, having never been there myself. The platforms must be huge -- four restaurants, a newspaper office, even a private apartment for Eiffel, where he entertained the press, royalty and celebrities. Historic photos and related sidebars enliven the book throughout. The author who has "translated" the Jill Jonnes's adult version of "Eiffel's Tower," Rebecca Stefoff, has made a fine niche for herself rewriting adult books for the younger reader. This book is part of the publishers "For Young People" series. The original "Eiffel's Tower" was published in 2009, so the publisher clearly is reaching back to find interesting nonfiction works. I'm glad for Jill Jonnes that her work is being introduced to a new audience!
