Second String Savior (False Icons Book 1) by Rick Gualtieri,R. E. Carr Review

This is a fun story, it take place in the same universe as the Tome of Bill, but it is about the OTHER prophecies, the ones that might come true, and the heros in waiting, waiting for the right set of circumstances to become that hero.this is the Story of Jessie, a girl, who might be someone else, who MIGHT be a hero, if the right things happen.--I really liked this story, it explores the question, well, if you have all of the different prophecies about a savior, who is coming to save the world, and the universe has conspired to have not one, but several potential heros in waiting. once the hero has been chosen, what happens to the rest of those people? those potential heros? Jessie wasa potential hero, if you have read the Tome of Bill series, you already know that Jessie is not the one spoken of, but... there are other prhpoicies out there, and perhaps Jessie can be pushed into a position where she could become. it seems like it. Jessie learns that the boy that she likes really like girls with red hair, so she picks up some hair dye to change her color, and ends up changing her life instead. she ends up with hair that is magical, and then she learns that the world is a lot bigger, and darker, then she ever knew. she learns about magic users, Magi, and Vampires, and other things. for people that have ready the tome of Bill, this is a re introduction into that world, but you are seeing it through an entirely different set of eyes. For people who have NOT read the Tome of Bill, that is OK. Second String Savior stands on it's own. you do not need to know anything about Bill the vampire, and the Tome of Bill. it is enjoyable on it's own, and it is the start of a new series in the same universe. it happens at the same time as certain events cronicaled in the Tome of Bill, and some events you get to see through Jesse's eyes, as a confused bystander, you do not need to know what is going on. As a fan, I enjoyed the easter eggs, not in your face callbacks, they flow as a part of Jessie's story, and make no mistake, this IS about Jessie. about her struggle to understand her place in the world with these new powers, her place in the prophecy that others want her to fulfill, and struggles with the decision about whether or not she wants this responsibility, and wonders if she has a choice about it.no spoilers here, but it IS a very good story, I enjoyed it, and plan to get the next in the series as soon as it comes out.

SECOND STRING SAVIOR is a novel set in the Tome of Bill world. Rick Gualtieri and R. E. Carr have written a story that takes place roughly contemporaneous with the first three Tome of Bill novels, culminating in the latter half of the book taking place during The Mourning Wood. As you can tell by the titles of the books, they're a comedy urban fantasy series that has a heavy emphasis on crass humor as well as puns. This novel is surprisingly different from the mainstream Tome of Bill series, though, in large part because the protagonist isn't a 30 year old male nerd but a teenage girl. Much to my surprise, the authors did a fantastic job of switching perspectives with Jesse Flores being entirely believable as a girl just entering into adulthood. She's snarky, geeky, and yet believably "cool" in a way her peers wouldn't appreciate until after high school. The premise is that Jesse Flores is an ordinary girl working at a comic book store with her family of MMA fighters as well as Sheriff father. Okay, maybe not so ordinary but Jesse is largely unaware how cool she is. There's a lot of Buffy homages present and these are all very well done, especially when Jesse gets a witch to tell her she's the Chosen One destined to save the world from monsters. Except, this is called "False Icons" and we already know from the Tome of Bill series that the legendary Icon is someone else. So what is Jesse? There's a lot of really fascinating stories spread throughout this novel. Jesse trying to get her high school rivals' boyfriend, being courted by a vampire who has seen many romantic movies, and also learning how to fight from her witch former gym teacher. It all leads up to the second half of the novel where Jesse is a secret guest at the peace treaty conference between the Sasquatch and vampire race. The second half of the novel is very different from the first half and really the two could have been expanded into separate books. I really enjoyed meeting the characters like Burp, Floof (the cuddliest Sasquatch ever), as well as the Dryads. The Dryads form the basis for a lot of the books fun as they are the ones most eager to make sure Jesse achieves her "destiny" while also being a wild hedonistic bunch. The real heart of this book is the fact that the characters play off one another extremely well. Gary the Witch and Jesse have a good relationship, I like her father's overprotective but not ridiculous nature, plus there's the unexpected romantic hints with her archenemy Wyatt. The fact Jesse is someone who doesn't want to be the Chosen One despite initial enthusiasm is also handled realistically.Overall, I really enjoyed this book and think it's probably the second best novel in the Tome of Bill universe (the best being Sunset Strip). Jesse Flores is a more likable protagonist than Bill and doesn't have nearly his issue with sexist comments or being a complete jerk. Take that from someone who likes Bill. I'm eager to see how her journey progresses and what's going to happen next in the series.

I'm a fan of Bill the Vampire, so learning that the universe of Bill had expanded was a welcome surprise. And holy crud, it takes place in and around Worcester, where I grew up!This cluth of characters has the same wise-assery that makes the other Bill books so appealing to me. I love that the protagonist, Jessie, is breaking more stereotypes. Just as Bill is a computer and gaming nerd who becomes an uber-vamp, Jessie is a female teen who's into comic books and martial arts, and is becoming a superhero level defenser against evil.Plus she gets to have bitchin' hair.As a Worcester native, it was nice to see mention of places like Higgins Armory (RIP),and the Ecotarium.I note that the Ecotarium is mentioned in context of Jessie meeting the kushtaka - a race of creatures that look like otters, but feed on your fear (and your flesh). Unless you can sing them a really good song.I swear, I'm not throwing spoilers here. But the scene ends with what may be the best sentence I've read in years: " 'Remind me to never lose this clam. Death otters are a thing.' "Even if you haven't read the other Bill books, this stands on its own as a complete story, and opens up new avenues of mythology to explore. I grew up with picture books of Greek myths next to my Dr. Seuss, so this did send me down a bit of a research rabbit hole.I can't wait for the next in this series!
