Waisted: A Novel by Randy Susan Meyers

Read Online and Download Waisted: A Novel by Randy Susan Meyers. In this “big-hearted triumph of a novel” (Carolyn Parkhurst, New York Times bestselling author) for fans of Jennifer Weiner, seven women enrolled in an extreme weight loss documentary discover self-love and sisterhood as they enact a daring revenge against the exploitative filmmakers.Alice and Daphne, both successful and accomplished working mothers, harbor the same secret: obsession with their weight overshadows concerns about their children, husbands, work—and everything else of importance in their lives. Daphne, plump in a family of model-thin women, discovered early that only slimness earns admiration. Alice, break-up skinny when she met her husband, risks losing her marriage if she keeps gaining weight. The two women meet at Waisted. Located in a remote Vermont mansion, the program promises fast, dramatic weight loss, and Alice, Daphne, and five other women are desperate enough to leave behind their families for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The catch? They must agree to always be on camera; afterward, the world will see Waisted: The Documentary. But the women soon discover that the filmmakers have trapped them in a cruel experiment. With each pound lost, they edge deeper into obsession and instability...until they decide to take matters into their own hands. Randy Susan Meyers “spins a compelling tale” (Kirkus Reviews) and “delivers a timely examination of body image, family, friendship, and what it means to be a woman in modern society...Culturally inclusive and societally on point, this is a must-read” (Library Journal).

Waisted: A Novel by Randy Susan Meyers Review

Much respect to Randy Susan Meyers. Not only is she a brilliant writer, but she's a fighter for women, for our rights, feelings and bodies. I've been overweight most of my life. I've heard it all. WAISTED chronicles that pain, those feelings involved with spending your life being looked at, but desperately trying to be thinner, to be better. Thank you, Randy.

I was expecting "Waisted" to be an honest but upbeat and encouraging approach to the problems overweight women face. It seems that I was as misled by what I'd read on the book jacket as the women in the story were...The basic premise is that several women are picked for what is supposed to be an elegant and uplifting weight loss spa in Vermont; in one month they are to have undergone a dramatic change physically, mentally, emotionally - with their bodies and minds in perfect balance - in fact, just the thing any overweight woman has dreamed of. Sound to good to be true? That's because it is (spoilers ahead). We follow specifically Daphne and Alice; both confident and capable women with great careers; the problem is they are overweight. We are not talking 300 lbs here, but more in the high 190s-low 200s range; enough to have to wear plus size clothing, say size 18-20. Certainly enough to be looked on dismissively by many. Daphne is an overweight woman whose mother and sisters are very thin, etc; her mother is a nightmare to Daphne, although Daphne's husband is a wonderful man who accepts her as she is and is very supportive and loving; the problem is she doesn't think she is lovable. The cruel things her mother says to her will have you clenching your teeth. Alice has a wonderfully supportive family but her husband is the one who says he is not attracted to her because of her weight. So both women commit to this month long retreat in hopes of pleasing the people in their lives (right away you know that's a problem). What they find when they get to Privation along with 5 other desperate women, is not salvation but humiliation, degradation, starvation - a nightmare, and every bit of it filmed for a documentary. Since they had to hand in their wallets and cell phones when they arrived, they are pretty much held captive. The whole first half of the book reads like they are prisoners of war; I have honestly never read anything so depressing in my life. I almost stopped but since I'd committed to review it, I finished it. After chapter after chapter of horrors, three of them concoct a plan to escape, taking the film with them. Back with their families, admittedly much lighter, we see that Daphne's mother is now fawning all over her new slender shape (yes, she is that shallow) and Alice's husband only sees the weight loss and can't comprehend the emotional/physical torment she endured. The end ties things up quickly and was not very well written in my opinion.I do not think that anyone overweight would derive any benefit from reading this book; in fact, it would problem just depress them. This is a problem facing so many women and this book does nothing to address the so many psychological issues the author gave these women. Society is cruel to women who are less than model thin. If you are thin and you read this for a laugh, shame on you. If you are overweight, give it a pass.I hate to say this, but I feel this book was a waste of time. Usually I share books with friends, this one I'm dumping right in the recycling bin.

Great message but this was such a strange story in which to tell it. There were also far too many characters. So much so, even the editors couldn’t keep them straight. One of the characters, Sharon Jane was also referred to as Susan Jane.

Honestly, this was a difficult book at times for a reader who has struggled with her weight most of her adult life. What started out as extremely uncomfortable portrayal of characters undergoing abuse, both self-inflicted and dished out by others, turned into a real self-awareness by different characters and a realistic discussion on the challenges of "dieting". Anyone undergoing the struggle will probably relate to one of Meyer's characters. This story are different than Meyers 'other books that I read, which told the stories of women victimized by men.

After reading Dietland, I thought I was going to read something similar where the women accept their bodies and not buy into chauvinism in regards to their bodies. The time on the diet reality show only made things worse for the three women who were the main characters of the book. One continued to take the dangerous diet pills. Another returned to her husband who belittled her & told her how her weight made him flirt with other women. It feels these women were really worse off than before. It was really sad.
