Ralph Peters served his nation ably as a soldier. His greatest and most enduring contribution to our nation though is through the Civil War novels of his Battle Hymn series. Peters has the unequaled ability to bring history to life. He realistically places us inside the heads of the soldiers and officers who fought in the Civil War. His latest book Darkness At Chancellorsville is no exception. Peters takes a fresh perspective on the battle and reminds us that but for a few personality quirks and twists of fate, Chancellorsville could have been the battle that ended the Civil War almost two years early. Every time I re-read one of Peters civil war novels I am vastly entertained and come out smarter about this seminal event in American history. Peters entire Battle Hymn series is nothing short of an American cultural masterpiece and it allows a modern reader to experience the Civil War as no other body of writing can. His work is especially poignant in these times when half the political spectrum in the USA wants to tear down the statues and consign our history to the memory hole. In this Peters novels are not only acts of literature, but of historical preservation itself.
Ralph Peters continues to place himself at the top of the list of Civil War battle recreation. His figures are vivid and realistic, neither romanticised nor demonised. They are in effect real people whose actions and decisions are spelled out in a way that brings these events into human focus. Personalities of the major characters are drawn in a detail that is rarely felt in traditional historical accounts.I was particularly interested in the focus on the Greensboro Guards (part of the 5th Alabama Infantry regiment), since my great-great grandfather was an original member of the unit. I was aware that they were part of Gen. Rodes' famous flanking movement and had read the book on the unit but was unaware of their particular part in the charge into Gen. Howard's division (my ancestor, whose name is inscribed on the monument to the unit in the centre of Greensboro, had already been promoted and transferred to the staff of Gen. Stuart by the time of the battle).I would have perhaps liked more detail on the desperate and outnumbered defence of the Salem Church by Gen. Wilcox and his unit, also heavily weighted with Alabama regiments, which prevented Gen. Lee's rear from being broken. But this is a minor issue in a book about the battle that came very close to winning the war in the east for the Confederates.It is another tour de force for Mr. Peters. Wish he would do some more of the Owen Parry series.
This book continues Ralph Peter's iconoclastic but extremely accurate portrayal of the American Civil War. None of the romance of Gone With the Wind or the whitewashed epic-ness of the Shaaras, this is a blood and guts and more blood and more guts account of war. The only complaints I have about this particular book is that it felt a little rushed and also, for having the subtitle "Stonewall Jackson's Triumph and Tragedy" Jackson himself is almost a secondary character. In the author's note, Peters mentions that he does not hold to the romantic version of Jackson's lingering death, but the story completely skips this part which I was really looking forward to getting his perspective on. But the battle scenes are excellent and the characters feel real!
I have read every book Peters/Parry has written. He brings characters to life like no other modern writer that I am aware of. But as another reviewer mentions, to the extent this was an effort to capture Jackson's essence, as suggested by the subtitle of the novel, this was a swing and a miss. Peters may have felt the same way when he was getting this book ready for publication: in the afterword, he spends a couple of paragraphs contending that Jackson is unknowable. But I felt Gwynne's biography made him knowable. So well had Gwynne made me feel like I knew Jackson that I was in tears as Gwynne recounted Jackson's wounding and slow demise, though I am no Confederate fan or southerner. (On a side note, iirc, Gwynne did seem to miss an insight Peters puts forth in the afterword, and which I think is the key to understanding Jackson: Jackson was almost certainly a high-functioning autistic; in fairness, I suspect it would be tough to get into the head of an autistic character unless you have a touch of autism yourself.) On the plus side, I never understood Chancellorsville better than after I read this book. I think too many amateur historians walk away with the sense that the battle basically ended with the smashing of the XI Corps and Jackson's wounding. Peters illuminates the progress of the second day of the battle, which itself was a huge missed opportunity for the Union, and what would have likely been a catastrophic (for the Confederates) third day had Hooker not lost his nerve. Mixed bag, but worth a read. BTW I am glad that Peters was brave enough to share the visit he received from Sickles ghost. This episode, along with incidents he has described in his other writings, leads me to suspect that his is a family, like the Pattons, where the tissue that separates the spirit world from the physical world can be thin. I get a kick when I hear that spirits like Sickles, who must have been a riot in the barroom, are still kicking up mischief.
Peters does an incredible job bringing the battle to life, while describing the nuts and bolts of what actually happened.He clearly did his homework in getting to know all of the historical characters portrayed, e.g. Stonewall Jackson, what he was like, how and why he was motivated and then writing the thoughts and words of Jackson as a character in the book.I also loved the smaller parts that described the horror of a wounded soldier drowning during the last night of epic rain and the description of blood lust in another rushing into battle.If you want to get drawn into learning an accurate history of the Civil War, start with this book.
