Coyote's Regret (Manny Rivera Mystery Series Book 8) by Rich Curtin Review

When I chose this book, I did not realize that it was number 8 in a series; however, I thoroughly enjoyed it as a standalone read. Fun read! The fact that I am slightly familiar with some of the area, in which the action took place, made me feel like I was watching the story unfold.I found this tale to be terrifically entertaining and easy to read. It had a hook that grabbed my attention at the very beginning, and it never let go! The storyline is a bit unusual, but it moves smoothly at a steady pace. It is packed with fascinating characters that come alive and add oodles of interest to the story. The lead character, Grand County deputy sheriff Manny Rivera is sharp, patient, mild mannered and is an all around good person. He is the kind of guy that doesn’t jump to conclusions, and he is methodical about what he does. I want to read more about him.The tale begins with Manny on vacation, and on his way from Moab, UT to Abiquiu, NM to ask a question. He is usually a very relaxed guy; however, he is a bit uptight at the moment. If the answer to the question is yes, then his life will be in for a big change. The jingling of his phone; however, and the conversation that follows changes his plans. His trip will have to be put on hold.Manny has been asked to lead an investigation into an apparent murder/suicide of an elderly couple in a remote area in an adjoining county. The investigation initially does look like a murder/suicide, but there are a few details that make Manny a bit dubious of this conclusion. If the reader is paying attention, there are some clues scattered hither and yon as to the identity of a suspect and the reason the couple is dead. Along the way, the reader meets a number of intriguing characters and visits some awesome landscape.There is an occasional flared temper of a few characters; however, the F and the S words did not mar this tale….not even once. Nice!!!

Deputy sheriff Manny Rivera is on his was to visit his girlfriend in New Mexico when he receives a phone call cancelling his leave time. A fellow sheriff in nearby San Juan County has asked that Manny take charge of an murder investigation of two elderly people dressed as hippies from the Summer of Love in San Francisco. The scene in a remote area of Utah appears to be a murder/suicide but Manny has his doubts as he begins his investigation.The author has written another fine mystery in this ongoing series featuring the very likable protagonist and told with a very strong sense of place which I really enjoy and includes interesting aspects of Navaho culture and way of life in the high desert country of Southeast Utah. I found the first part of the book to meander along rather slowly but the pace really picks up later on and the pages begin to fly quickly so be patient. The author does have a tendency to "beat a dead horse" in reiterating certain parts of the story but that is really a minor irritant to me as the reader and I found this a very enjoyable read which I highly recommend. I look forward to going back and reading the books in the series that I have missed so far.....Enjoy!!!

This series just gets better and better. Descriptions of Southwest makes you feel like you’re there. Interesting story about kids who were hippies in the 60’s who end up dead in a possible murder/suicide, and it’s up to Manny Rivera to figure out what happened.I like how compassionate, and how realistic Manny is portrayed. Well written, but maybe a smidge too much repetition, however, I’m looking forward to the next book in the series.

I've read this whole series and have really enjoyed each book. A police procedural with heart and great descriptions of my beloved southwest (descriptions right up there with Hillerman for mood and having a sense of place). !Look forward to the next one!😊

The Manny series started off strong and then seemed like it stumbled for a while as Mr. Curtin wandered off into distracting political tangents in several of the books. I actually put off buying this one after being disappointed by previous volumes. I'm very glad I finally took the chance. This was Manny's most compelling, page-turning, and interesting mystery since the very first book. A fantastic plot filled with many twists and turns and likeable characters, and all set in some of the most beautiful country on earth. Well done, Mr. Curtin. Please keep them coming. Very excited to see what happens next.
