The Wise and the Wicked by Rebecca Podos Review

I found this book because a random tweet showed up on my thread of someone describing their writing style as "weird and gay". Sounded right up my alley, so I replied to it saying "sounds good, where do I read?" Possibly she thought I was insane, some random stranger on Twitter, but I really wanted to know so I followed the link she posted and this was the first book I chose.I think maybe I should find all my books on Twitter now, cuz damn was this good. The characters were so rich and compelling, the plot so intricate and unravelled so slowly. I really enjoyed it and I especially loved the trans representation. It was so well done and respectful. I think I've found a new author, now I just have to decide which book to read next.

I’m a sucker for queer, supernatural YA, and this book did not disappoint. Well paced, and deftly plotted. It got a little complicated at times and I found myself having to flip back to make sense of it, but I’m also reading while quarantining with two small kids, so it could just be that. REALLY hoping there is a sequel, because there is a lot unfinished!

I really enjoyed The Wise and the Wicked.The only draw back for me was that I wanted the universe to be expanded/explained more, as well as the different families.I’d love for this to have a sequel, as the ending isn’t necessarily a finality (technically?)That being said, I also understood why the ending was written the way it was and it still satisfied me.

The Chernyavsky family had a lot of power in Russia. But there was a family trying to stop them. The daughters were sent to America. Their powers were weakened, but they still had them. All the children born were always female. They were led by their elder, Polina, who was a very hard woman. Polina raised her sister’s children after she died. Polina favored Evelina who ended up having three daughters, Dahlia, Ginger, and Ruby. Evelina took off when Ruby was young. Dahlia left school and took care of her sisters.The Chernyavsky family did have a couple powers left. Some could heal a bit. But the one things they knew each could do was see their “Time”. Sometime between 13 and 16 (usually), the girl sees how she will die. This is written into a book and read at the gathering when the person dies. When Polina dies, her entry was read and it was wrong. Polina lived to be in her 90’s and never had children. Her “Time” stated that she died while having a child. Evelina shows up when Polina dies. Each family member can feel when one of them passes, but they don’t know who it is until everyone is checked in on.Ruby’s best friend is her cousin, Cece. Cece just had her Time and didn’t want to tell Ruby right away, but they finally confessed to each other. Seeing that Polina’s Time was wrong, the girls decided to do some snooping into their family’s history. Both of them are dating (Talia and Dov), but they know they can’t confide in them. Dov ends up doing something strange and Ruby learns that their history’s overlap.Evelina says she went away to study from other magic users. She claims that she can add years to the lives of others and wants to use it for Ruby. She first learned what Polina did to live longer and she knew Ruby was the strongest sister. But all magic comes at a cost and Ruby has to decide if it’s worth it or not.I loved the family relationships and the flashback stories to the folklore from Russia. The writing flowed well. Even though I struggle at times with this type of book, I found that this one was easier for me to get into.I gave this book 4 stars. I would classify this book as YA contemporary combined with magical realism.The narrator of this book is 16 year old Ruby (3rd person POV). She comes from a family where the women have powers. At a certain point in their lives they will have a vision of when they will die.This was an original story with a pretty cover. There is some romance in the book. But to me it wasn't the main focus.Ruby had two sisters. But I honestly I did not feel like we saw enough of them for me to really know them. Her cousin was in the book much more and I really liked her (Cece).But overall I really struggled to finish this book. There are lgbt themes. But it was fairly PG IMO.I thought that the premise was interesting. I enjoy reading about psychics or people will abilities. The idea of people seeing their time of death was a good one. But I didn't love this book. There were a lot of stories told in italics and I didn't really enjoy these. Because of the 3rd person POV I felt disconnected from Ruby. And then the book just ends, with no real conclusion.
