The author, Alice Paul Tapper, 11 years old, was named after Alice Paul, a woman who worked for women’s rights a hundred years ago. This is an important book for young girls, and I think for boys. We all have problems with confidence, and many boys are not as confident as others. They could learn several important lessons from listening to Alice Paul..Alice discovered one day after she raised her hand in class and gave the wrong answer, how humiliated she felt. She did not raise her hand again. She talked with her mom about her feelings, and that she observed other girls were not raising their hands to answer questions. They did not seem as confident as the boys. This is Alice’s story on how she devised a plan with her Girl Scout troop to help all girls to become more confident. This is a wonderful story by Alice Paul, and I give her many kudos on her ability to recognize a problem, to discuss it with her family, and to help solve that problem.Marta Kissi, the illustrator, has provided colorful, interactive and fun illustrations to depict Alice Paul’s storyline. They add a picturesque view of Alice Paul’s step by step Initiatives to solve her problem. Every child should feel energized from the book and the illustrations.This is an important book for all children about how to solve problems and in the process gain confidence. This ability to gain confidence in raising hands in class will follow children into adulthood. The book is particularly directed towards girls, but boys can learn a lot from reading this book. I ordered this book for my 12-yr. old great niece, as she has been a victim of bullying in school. I wanted her to read it, and learn that it's okay for you to speak up in class, and not feel intimidated by anyone - not just the boys. When she was in grammar school, she was always on honor roll, with A's and sometimes B's. She attended school on an Air Force base, as her mother served our country. Now that she is out, and in public school, things are different, and she is now in middle school, where things are tough anyway. I hoped that this book would help regain her confidence, and put her God-given talents to work. When I asked her, she said she really liked it, and liked the message, but felt that it was geared for kids 11 and under.
This is a terrific book for young girls headed off to school . Both the text and the illustrations are simple but engaging and have a powerful message. I wish my own daughters had been less anxious about being wrong and more willing to speak out in class as young girls. I am giving this book as a gift to all my friends with young daughters.
I bought this book for my 7 year old. It came today and she really enjoyed reading it. The front cover of this book was so fascinating to her.
I just got the book and read it twice - once to know the story, the second time to look at the wonderful illustrations again. I can't wait to read it this weekend with my two granddaughters, Sophie and Amelia. Bravo to Alice Paul Tapper for coming up with the idea for a Girl Scout patch project, and for writing this charming book. I love your bravery! (Also, nice job Mom and Dad.)Denise HintonPortland, OR
