The Stalker: Book 16 in the Sunday Times bestselling crime series (DSI William Lorimer) by Alex Gray Review

The author came highly recommended as did her William Lorimer series. I decided against starting from the beginning and chose one of the later books as they are standalone novels. There was a lot to like about the book and the writing, but ultimately I found it boring. The pacing was slow, there was a lot of different point-of-view chapters, some of which felt unnecessary, and the character of Lorimer appeared more like a cameo role rather than the main player. Considering a lot of the plot hinged on how much Maggie Lorimer looked like two murder victims, there was very little description to use foreshadowing on how this would play out. Initially, the disparity in ages between her and the other victims made it harder to see how she could be one of the stalker's victims.Other than the stalker character and the publicist, everyone else came across as 'too nice'. Real people are a mixture of irritating habits and characteristics whereas most of the characters here, especially Maggie, came across as saints. This may well be great in real life but in fiction it's boring. One of the reasons I enjoy murder mysteries and police procedurals is the element of working out yourself who the villain is. There wasn't too much emphasis on that in this book as we have parts of chapters in his voice, and it was a fairly easy guess from around the halfway mark. Another of the books in the series might make me change my mind, but so far I'm not sure I would bother with another one.

Having been stalked by an "admirer" long ago, I found this novel to be especially creepy. While there was no criminal intent in my experience, it is an insidious crime, tense for the reader and the fictional victim. In this case, there was definitely a criminal outcome. I looked forward to reading about Lorimer, Maggie, Solly etc., and the characters were as interesting and likable as ever. However, I did know - or guess - who the stalker was very early on and wondered why he wasn't pursued by the police in a more timely way. I wanted Lorimer et al to get busy and connect the dots! I will certainly continue this series, especially to revisit the cast of endearing characters.

Alex Gray has done it again, written another spellbinder. I love the characters in her books: Lorimer & Maggie, Solly & Rosie, the entire cast. In this book Lorimer is faced with the murder of a woman, then a second, then further research reveals a third. Meanwhile Maggie is on a book tour promoting her new children's book. Lorimer is not the only policeman that notices a resemblance between Maggie and the victims. Then he is taken off the case.

It must of been fun to have the plot develop around an author. In marriages among police the relationship between the Lorimers is unfortunately among the few better ones. It is nice to see this relationship strengthen while each member of the pair grows individually.

A big thank you to Alex Gray for continuing to write this remarkable series! Reading about the use of Soil Science to help solve this mystery makes me wish I were younger and going to College again to,perhaps, make a study of this fascinating subject. I love reading about Scotland and am always ready for more detailed descriptions of this beautiful country. A very satisfied reader!
