The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas

Read Online and Download The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas. The Black Tulip is a historical novel written by Alexandre Dumas, père.The story begins with a historical event — the 1672 lynching of the Dutch Grand Pensionary (roughly equivalent to a modern Prime Minister) Johan de Witt and his brother Cornelis, by a wild mob of their own countrymen — considered by many as one of the most painful episodes in Dutch history, described by Dumas with a dramatic intensity. The main plot line, involving fictional characters, takes place in the following 18 months; only gradually does the reader understand its connection with the killing of the de Witt brothers. The city of Haarlem, Netherlands, has set a prize of Æ’100,000 to the person who can grow a black tulip, sparking competition between the country's best gardeners to win the money, honour and fame. Only the city's oldest citizens remember the Tulip Mania 30 years earlier, and the citizens throw themselves into the competition. The young and bourgeois Cornelius van Baerle has almost succeeded but is suddenly thrown into the Loevestein prison. There he meets the prison guard's beautiful daughter Rosa, who will be his comfort and help, and eventually become his rescuer. The novel was originally published in three volumes in 1850 as La Tulipe Noire by Baudry (Paris).Â

The Black Tulip by Alexandre Dumas Review

I already had the book so I knew it's a good book to read. I had collection of the writer work.

Loved this book! There were some issues with the Kindle editing, but otherwise, a great read!

Sans doute, Dumas' most interesting [and last] novel.

My book club read The Black Tulip, which I purchased at Amazon.com. It was not a good or interesting read for me. In fact, after plowing through about 70 pages, I gave it to another book club member to read, and she didn't finish it, either. While I have enjoyed other novels by Alexandre Dumas, this one was not comprehensible nor interesting. I would not recommend it to anyone. Not one of the eight members of our book club (all educators - mostly in English & library) liked this book.

great story.. recommended..
