When the Americans invaded the Japanese-controlled islands of Saipan and Tinian in 1944, civilians and combatants committed mass suicide to avoid being captured. Though these mass suicides have been mentioned in documentary films, they have received scant scholarly attention. This book draws on United States National Archives documents and photographs, as well as veteran and survivor testimonies, to provide readers with a better understanding of what happened on the two islands and why. The author details the experiences of the people of the islands from prehistoric times to the present, with an emphasis on the Japanese, Okinawan, Korean, Chamorro and Carolinian civilians during invasion and occupation.

Mass Suicides on Saipan and Tinian, 1944: An Examination of the Civilian Deaths in Historical Context by Alexander Astroth Review

Astroth’s book is a must for the library of serious Pacific War historian. It is more than a rehash of earlier works. Furthermore, a lot of original and in-depth research went into this book. He begins with some pre-history, moving into the long Spanish, then short German period of European colonization before launching into the Japanese colonial period following WWI. More importantly, once he arrives at the invasions of Saipan and Tinian, the story becomes more detailed, finally focusing on atrocities and mass suicides.Anybody who has done research in the field of military history knows that official histories and after-action reports are vetted. Put another way, they are sanitized and don’t always give a true picture of events. Unique to Astroth’s research, he desensitized official reports from the field to show what really happened. The only negative to this otherwise excellent historical work is the asking price of $45US. This alone is almost guaranteed to keep the sales at a minimum.

Alex Astroth made a strong commitment to research this largely ignored topic of WWII history. He opens our eyes to a dark subject but a compelling aspect of human trauma underlined by love. Everyone is a victim of war.

Interesting but sad to learned things that happened during the war
