“Murder as I know it is something illegal. It ain’t illegal to lynch someone for a crime,” says Sarah Jennings. Her mother had been accused of stealing flour and was lynched for it. Silence at the Lock tells Sarah and her mother’s story, while exploring the complexities of race relations between whites and blacks in rural Virginia. Those complexities mixed with family secrets boil over in an ugly confrontation between, Mary Steele, a young girl who is trying to bring justice to Sarah and her mother, and white supremacists who would prefer to keep family secrets quiet.Silence at the Lock began as an image in Andi Cumbo-Floyd’s imagination of a woman hanging from a tree by a lock. It is third in a series about Mary Steele, a young woman who is able to see and touch ghosts, make photographs move, and be teleported. These gifts help her bring justice to “the least of these,” people long forgotten, but who can’t find rest until Mary is able to bring them justice. While Cumbo-Floyd says Silence at the Lock is the final book in the series, I hope she writes more.Silence at the Lock explores the unjust history Americans’ treatment of blacks. One of Cumbo-Floyd’s characters says, “There are some injustices whites need to work on repairing. Others that whites need to slow down on, and not get ahead of what needs to be done in order to make things right.” This novel and the others in the series point the way to that work. They are wise, good reads—page turners. I highly recommend them for the woke and about to be woke.

Andi, I can always count on you for a great read. I love your characters, your honest writing style and the positions/experiences you put them in. I love your writing style. This is a very timely book release since I had just researched 6 lynchings victims for a project. No doubt you are one of my favorite authors. I am looking forward to your next book.

This is the third in a series of powerful stories. It is rich and deep and profound. And after you read and love it, you'll want to get "Steele Secrets" and "Charlotte and the Twelve." YA and adults alike, you won't be disappointed.
