This collection offers a unique perspective in that it allows the authors of books on Alzheimer's and other dementias the opportunity to "tell the story behind the story." I found myself connecting with many of the authors' experiences as a dementia caregiver. It's that connection, and the chance to share one's story, that is so important.
I like how it touches a little on each author's story, showing just how vast and profound the affects of dementia can be. Also is a good resource for finding more reading material!
This amazing book is a collection of articles from the AlzAuthors website where the purpose is to help remove the stigma surrounding these diseases and to help those on the dementia journey. Each week an author who has written about dementia is invited to share something about their book including their motivation to write it, feedback they have received, and whether they feel they have helped others and why. This collection contains all the articles from the website’s first year.The book itself is a great read. There are common themes that run through many of the stories: loved ones who disappear a little at a time, caregivers who want to share to let others know they are not alone, the overwhelming nature of dealing with dementia, and the role reversal involved in caring for a loved one with the disease. On the other hand, each story is different: some are funny, some are full of grief, some are tinged with bitterness, but most are a combination. Some authors buried themselves in research, wanting to know exactly what they were facing, while others didn’t want to know. In addition, Alzheimer’s and Dementia Caregiving Stories is a bibliography of resources. Each article is following by information about where to buy the author’s book and how to contact the author.Alzheimer’s and dementia are insidious diseases that touch a majority of people in some way during their lives. This book offers insight that is not available anywhere else, and I highly recommend it.
