It's 1968 and sixteen-year-old Jill is fresh out of family. Her mom is dead, her father disappeared, and Jill is left with the choice of entering foster care or running for her freedom.Choosing freedom, Jill makes her way to New York City, with a handful of dollars and vague dreams of fame on Broadway. Jill finds a chosen family among a ragtag group of teenagers who each must face difficult choices and consequences in their own pusuits of freedom.This is a sweet coming-of-age story that left me wanting to know what happened next. Hopefully we will see more of Jill’s adventures in the future.
I found Alicia Brown's debut novel to be well-written, fast-paced, and engaging...which is a significant endorsement, coming from a male in his mid-thirties (not exactly the "target audience" of a YA-novel written from the perspective of a 16-year old girl in 1968!). There was a lot in Jill's backstory to which I could relate, and I never found it difficult to picture the scenes the author was describing. The story really picked up for me after the "be-in" scene, after which Jill is faced with mounting choices with potentially far-reaching consequences. Would highly recommend to anyone looking to learn about or relive the late 1960s, and to any fan of young adult novels that don't rely on a sci-fi / fantasy / dystopian "crutch" to tell their story.
This was a truly enjoyable read. I loved all the unique and interesting characters. I agree with other reviewers that it would be great to read more about Jill and where the road to freedom takes her!
Alicia Brown is too young to have lived this book, but you'd be forgiven for thinking she must have - her grasp of the era is that sure. Protagonist Jill is a 16-year-old orphan striking out on her own in New York City. Fresh off the bus and terrified, she is taken under the collective wings of a loose-knit group of hippies. With them, she finds a new family that supports and nurtures her. Yes, they're messy and unreliable, and yes, she forks over her small cash stash to rent a communal apartment, but still, the group offers her security. Young adult readers will identify with Jill's search for autonomy and the difficult decisions that come with it. The ending fairly screams "sequel", and I trust that Brown is working on just that.
Jill, our main character, is a courageous teen with nothing to lose when she decides to follow her heart to Manhattan, fulfill her dreams and 'just be'....be free. Her new experiences, friendships, loves, disappointments, unexpected challenges and bumps on the road (or cracks in the city pavement) are all part of this engaging story, set in 1968. I felt invested in Jill's journey and her new city friends almost immediately. Although a YA release, I found 'Freedom Dreamers' to be an equally satisfying summer read for adults, like myself. Ms. Brown moves Jill's story along in a fluid and appealing pace. I could have finished the book quickly but I found myself wanting to savor each chapter. I agree with the other reviewer that I sincerely hope for an FD trilogy by this talented author.
