Phantoms and Phonographs (A Traveling Town Mystery, Book 4) by Ami Diane Review
I enjoyed the first two books in the series, but by the third and certainly this one, I was struggling to get through it. The time travel element has not been utilized to much extent, and the crimes seem to be pasted on and could have taken place in any cozy series. My main gripe, though, is that the characters have by now devolved into being one dimensional: Wink with the squirrel, pink hair and tracksuits; Flo with her never explained mania for weaponry (and who is referred to at least every ten pages as "crazy" ). Characters are described with little depth and no development- all we find out about Rose, for example, is that she wears pin curls and cat-eye glasses and at least for the first few books, makes horrible sounding jello molds. It's as if there is a kind of shorthand. Wink and Flo were so annoying that I could nearly not finish the book, and the main character gets more and more obnoxious. Some of the questions raised by the time travel element (which could have been explained a little) are never resolved or alluded to.
I love this series and can hardly wait for the next addition. The characters are funny, creative and unique. I love the premise for this story because anything could happen and the idea of all these people from different times living together is interesting. The way they have developed over the series is cohesive and believable (for the most part!). Very few typos is also a pleasure.
Just stop with the wise crackin'....it doesn't work. Instead of being an a## learn from the past.....very likely no one would miss Ella and the books would be fun...I suggest Ella go to the outside and we enjoy the town
I am really enjoying this series of crazy, quirky characters, mayhem, and mystery. It is so well-written that it pulls you right along to the end and as you wanting more!😄
I enjoy these stories about the quirky traveling town. The characters are fun and there is always a little murder. Plus who knows where the town will jump next!
