The Place Between Breaths by An Na Review
Truthfully I had to go see the author’s commentary about the ending being explained but after that it was clear and really amazing. It was sad watching the character kind of fall apart but in the end there seemed to be some hope and that’s really all we can ask for for the main character. I know she isn’t real but there are real people out there dealing with this real disease and I can only hope and pray that one day we will have a sure fire cure.
This book was not memorable and I really did not like the storyline. However, the writing was good so I think it will appeal to some people. It just wasn't for me.
Not since I Never Promised You a Rose Garden by Hannah Greenberg (1964), has there been such an accurate rendering of mental illness in a YA book. An Na's prose is diamond precise, sharp and glittering. Her style leads the reader through Grace's world--a schizophrenic mother who simply disappears, a distant father focused on finding a cure for the disease, Grace navigating high school with limited social skills, and sense of being different until...wait a minute. Did we just change narrators? Who is the narrator(s)? What's going on here? Mental illness is a world that swirls with reality and delusion. What is real? Does anyone know? A PLACE BETWEEN breaths is a relatively short, but intense read. It is literary fiction in the very best sense of the word. It is not an easy read. (I'm on my third reading in 24 hours, still finding the hints and references I missed the first two times). For those of us familiar with mental illness, every word of this masterpiece rings true. To those unfamiliar with this world, allow yourself to be confused and anxious and baffled....just as these characters are. Schizophrenia occurs most often in early adulthood, and is no respecter of intelligence or class. It's a mysterious and unforgiving disease. The author pulls no punches in its portrayal. I predict this will become a classic on this subject.
It's short at 181 pages, but is very powerful in portraying what it’s like to descend into the madness of schizophrenia. Grace’s mother left her behind one day when she was young. Mom suffered from schizophrenia and sensed that staying might be dangerous for her daughter. Ever since, Grace’s father has been on a beyond determined search for two things. To find his wife and to enable some research facility to find the holy grail-a gene that can be re-engineered to cure the illness that stole Grace’s mother. Told from Grace’s point of view, this story requires very careful reading as the events and changes she experiences are both subtle and often clouded by her growing illness. It’s not an easy read, but well worth the time and effort to do so.
Scary in a good way, and not too long.Grace's mother had schizophrenia and left. Grace has it, and is afraid.I don't know enough about the disease to know if it was done accurately. But the book was gripping.
